William 'Bill' Norwood is a retired United Airlines Captain. He was the first African American pilot for United Airlines. He flew the friendly skies for 31 years before retiring in 1996. Bill, who was an ROTC member at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, flew the B-52 in the Air Force. His inspiration was his elementary school principal in his small Southern Illinois community of Centralia, who was also a pilot with the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II. Along with what we just heard, I would like to take a moment this morning to recognize and honor Raymond Vaughn Boose, who as of Sunday, was the oldest living World War II combat veteran in Illinois. He passed away on Sunday, February 3. Mr. Boose resided in my hometown of Louisville. He was 106 years old and he had 106 grandchildren and great grandchildren. He marched across Italy in 1943, he stormed the beaches of Normandy in 1944, and the following year he pushed through France. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for a leg wound. He also received a second Purple Heart and the Oak Leaf Clusters for injuries incurred while being literally blown out of a foxhole. He received three Campaign Stars as well as a Presidential Citation. Mr. Boose said, and I quote, the life… 'The key to a happy life is a good woman.' Also, 'the key to a long life is to not overeat, keep moving, and eat eggs every day. Two is fine.' Would you join me in a moment of silence for the greatest generation?"
