As we close out this first week of Black History Month, we want to thank you for your indulgence. You'll continue to hear from black caucus Members. Please, note that our celebration with culminate with our soiree which is February 20, at Abraham Lincoln Museum. Last year's theme was education. This year's theme will be science, innovation, and technology. It's always a great event. We're gonna have a lot of fun so plan to be there. It's extremely important, extremely important, that we tell our story. And just a piece of history here, it was in August of 1619… Thank you, Madam Chair… It was in August of 1619 when the first slave ship called the White Lion arrived at Point Comfort, Virginia, with the first 20 enslaved Africans. This would kick off the American slave trade where our country would see millions of black slaves imported to the New World over the next few centuries. Today's black history tribute honors those first slaves that arrived in 1619. Ever since that first slave ship arrived here, African culture has an incredible, undeniable, enduring influence on the trajectory of American history. Made no mistake about it, our 400 year history story has a lot of pain to it. But it's also a story that has to be told to commemorate our journey and all the many achievements and contributions African Americans have made to our great country. Slavery didn’t break us. In fact, it made us stronger. From slavery to fighting in the Civil War, to working against oppression of Jim Crow segregation, to the Civil Rights movement, to the contemporary industrial prison complex. It's been 400 years of resilience; 400 years of determination; 400 years of advocacy. As we move forward with this session and the 101st General Assembly, please, understand why we're so passionate and motivated to fight for social justice. It's because we understand that we stood on the shoulders of our African American ancestors. It's because we embrace the responsibility that we have to honor our struggle and that’s why we pick up our blood stained banner, march forward fighting for equality, fighting for equity. It's because we understand that throughout these 400 years. Even though African Americans still face many challenges, and let me just remind you that it will be reflected that a lot of the legislation that we sponsor, African Americans throughout this state are still adversely disproportionately impacted by unemployment, poverty, lack of quality education, violence, trauma… There's many things that are still there that we continue to struggle with. We will continue to use Black History Month as a platform to elevate the untold and under told stories of our history. But, we will also use it to promote a promising future for African Americans moving forward. And reflecting on these last 400 years, we know that we cannot give up and we will continue to endure. As we commemorate the arrival of the first Africans 400 years ago, we know that progress will take a collective effort. So we want to use month to invite, urge, and employ all of you in the chamber to not just simply recognize our contributions to society, but more importantly we want you to join us. Join us. Join us in our fight as we continue to address issues effecting black communities throughout the state of Illinois. We owe it to ourselves and to those first slave that came here against their will in 1619. And remember, this is not just black history. It's our history. This is U.S. history.
