He passed away a week ago yesterday which is kind of unique in his life that the day that the new Mayor was sworn in was the day that Mayor Butler passed away. And so today his funeral is at 1:45 this afternoon. And I appreciate also the Governor's Office providing a proclamation for the City of Marion and for his family. And it goes without saying that he was an awesome gentlemen, he was interesting to fight for Southern Illinois, to fight for the City of Marion and the growth of that and the success of Marion has a lot to do with Robert 'Bob', Butler. And so he called it the hub of the universe and if you questioned on him, he would take you to task. The Jewish community and the Chabad of Paw-way, California, which as many of you know over the weekend suffered a deadly terrorist attack against the congregation. Many of whom were injured including the Rabbi, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein including the death of a congregate, Lori Gilbert Kaye. My colleagues and I on this floor have talked about the rise of anti-Semitism recently. Warned about this risks and the dangers not just to an individual but to a community and to all of our communities that are practicing the religious faith. And this weekend we saw what happens. We saw what happens when there's a rise of anti-Semitism, we saw with the shooting in the Chabad, we saw the shooting in the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburg, the First Baptist Church shooting in Texas a few years ago, the Methodist Church shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, and of course the deadly shooting just a few weeks ago in Sri Lankan against people who are practicing their faith. So what can be done? What can be done about hate speech, hate crimes, hate attacks? Cause hate crimes are different than other crimes in the sense that they are designed to terrorize an entire community. As there's a rise in hate crimes and anti-Semitisms and hate in general, hate in general on the left and on the right, this rise of hate, what we can do is we can show leadership. We can show compassion for everyone. We can show decency. As we enter this month of May, and we spend our time together, please let us bend the curve in honor and support of our brothers and our sisters, in brotherhood and sisterhood. Let us support and protect the safety of those that are trying to pray regardless of their religious beliefs. During what is one of the most precious times in our lives that we spent that day and the following days in the hospital as Ashley was recovering from the birth. After April was born, Ashley was moved to the recovery room and we spent the rest of the day in the room with our newborn daughter. That day and the days that followed, we watched both local and national news as we followed the coverage of a missing child, AJ. To the murder of young AJ and ultimately to the murder charges filed against his parents. We followed as we learned of the many times that the family had with the local police and DCFS. We witnessed again, just as we have in several recent headline news articles, we failed another child. I say we because this Body that we have the honor of serving in, holds a level of responsibility and oversight to prevent more children across our state from having to endure the life that AJ was forced to endure. That’s why I'm calling on Governor Pritzker to do whatever is in his power to help reform the agency that is underfunded, understaffed, and at times underappreciated. I believe this rises to level of a public health crisis. I also want to remind everyone of the need not just for more funding, but for real reforms. The ones that actually lead to better results. We have to do better for the children of this state, we have to. Us, the Governor, the Senate, it’s our responsibility to stop failing the children across Illinois.
