I rise today to honor a great man, one that I called a friend, that I met when I was a very young lad of probably around eight or nine years old. John 'Jack' McGurie. He was my predecessor here in the House of Representatives, and he was a true Statesmen. And today I wear the closest I have to a green tie, because every day on the House Floor Jack used to wear a green tie. Jack was born in Joliet. Eighty-six years old when he passed. He was graduate of Joliet Catholic High School. Played football. Went to Joliet Junior College to where he is in the Joliet Junior College Football Hall of Fame. Then went to the United States Army and served in Germany during the Korean War. And after he was discharged… from the service, went to Colorado State College and graduated in 1958. Jack was a long-time public servant. Served as Township Supervisor of Joliet Township for many years, and was elected to this esteemed Body in 1990 and began his term in 1991 until he retired in April of 2012. Again, Jack served with my father as township supervisors in adjoining townships. And that's where I got to know him. Jack was one of the true gentlemen in our area. Never had a bad word to say about anybody. He loved his constituents and served them with great honor. And when I got appointed to this seat, the first thing everybody told me was, those are awful big shoes you're going to have to fill. And I'm still working on that. We're joined today by Jack's daughters, Julie Sicinski and Kathleen Doughtery. And I just want to say to them, Jack was just a wonderful, wonderful man and a true public servant. And I want to thank you for sharing your father with us throughout this state. He was a champion of senior issues and was a great leader within the Will County area. He is going to be dearly missed. And with that, I would ask the Body for a moment of silence. "Thank you, Mr. Speaker. I rise for the… today's black history moment. South Carolina, 1959, a 9-year-old black boy sat on a library counter refusing to leave until the librarian gave him his books. He did not care that the librarian had called the police. He was not fazed that during this time in history places of learning were staunchly segregated. He was unwavering as the police came marching in, confident that the knowledge he sought was rightfully his. And with courage and pride, Ronald E. McNair left the library unscathed with his books in hand and his mother and brother by his side. Decades later, that very library, the Lake City Library, would become the Dr. Ronald E. McNair Life History Center. Dr. Ronald Erwin McNair was born in 1950 in a low-income community in South Carolina. In 1971, he graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. He then enrolled in Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At first, McNair was afraid to pursue Physics at the graduate level, for fear he would… he could not compete. However, he persisted through his trepidation and, in 1976, at the age of 26, he graduated with honors and earned his PhD degree in LASER Physics. Dr. McNair soon became a recognized expert in LASER Physics while working as a staff physicist with Hughes Research Laboratory. In 1978, NASA picked 35 new astronauts from 8 thousand applicants. In 1984, McNair was Mission Specialist aboard the flight of the Space Shuttle, Challenger making him the second African American to fly to space. McNair and the 4 other crew members logged 191 hours in space on the eight-day mission. Challenger made 128 orbits of the Earth on that trip. For his achievements, Ronald E. McNair received three honorary doctorate degrees and many fellowships and commendations. These distinctions include: Presidential Scholar, Ford Foundation Fellow, National Fellowship Fund Fellow, Omega Psi Phi Scholar of the Year, Distinguished National Scientist, National Society of Black Professional Engineers, and the Friend of Freedom Award. Ronald E. McNair also held a fifth degree black belt in karate and was an accomplished jazz saxophonist. He was married and was the dedicated father of a daughter and son. After his death in the Challenger explosion on January 18, 1986, members of Congress provided funding for the Ronald E. McNair Post- Baccalaureate Achievement Program to encourage students from low-income, first-generation college backgrounds, or students from groups underrepresented in fields of graduate study to enroll in graduate studies. Courtesy of Senator Martwick, we have boxes of these delicious pastries behind the chamber and also in the offices of the Speaker. So please go and enjoy pastry. Also know that the pastries, in addition to adding some calories to our diet, are also… the proceeds from the purchase of these paczkis are helping to support the Polish American Association, which was founded in 1922 and contributes to many worthy causes in the community. Also, Senator Martwick and I would like this year to be the year that we start the Polish American Caucus, which will be opened to all Members and will be a way for us to celebrate the rich history and significant contributions of Polish Americans in the State of Illinois.
