"Thank you. Today I'm honored to welcome to the General Assembly our newest Member. If our other Members will help me welcome Representative Cyril Nichols from the 32nd District who's come here replacing Representative Andre Thapedi. Please help me welcome him to the General Assembly."

"Representative Nichols, would you care to say a few words?"

"Of course. If I can have everybody's attention. I'd first like to give honor and praise to our creator, for without God none of us would be sitting here. I give the same praise to our ancestors and all those that came before me, for without their infinite struggle and wisdom we would not be standing here today. I'm the son of Ulysses and Markusree Nichols. I am honored to be here. I'm a young man born and raised in Chicago, in Cabrini-Green neighborhood. My father worked for Tenneco chemicals and he would later work for the CHA. My mother was a community servant, not an activist. She was a servant. She took me everywhere that she went. The board meetings, the representative meetings, alderman meetings. She served young kids lunches in the summers. She made sure teenagers, at that time of 55 years old, she made sure at that time that they had summer jobs at the CEDA program. This is who I am. This is where my background lies. I'm not a guy that came down here looking to be something else later on. I'm a person that came down here to serve the people of the 32nd District in the State of Illinois. So, I won't stand before you much longer, but I am honored.
