That man is the original founder of Rockford, a former slave and forever a founder of Rockford, Illinois, Lewis Lemon. Lewis Lemon was born in 1812 in North Carolina as a slave. As a child slave in the South during the early 1800s, Lewis had little hope for his future. However, at age 17, he was sold for $450 to a businessman named… I won't name him. And this twist of fate led Lewis on a path that would help him make history. Shortly after purchasing Lewis, the master found… followed his brother to Galena, Illinois to seek out business opportunities. After arriving in Galena, Kent and Lewis met a man by the name of Thatcher Blake, and together they decided to travel to Rock River Valley looking for a location to start a lumber mill. The men traveled by canoe to the Pecatonica & Rock Rivers, Lewis doing much of the hard manual labor, and eventually found a location on the west bank of the Rock River to settle. In August of 1834, these men began what became the City of Rockford. During this time, Lewis Lemon reached an agreement with Kent that if he worked off an equivalent of $800, plus 10 percent interest, Kent will grant him his freedom. Determined and unwavering, Lewis worked diligently for his freedom and became a free man in September 1839. After becoming a free man, Lewis Lemon stayed in Rockford and eventually established himself with a small shack and a vegetable garden near what is now Kilburn Street. He continued to work as a truck farmer, growing vegetables for Rockford residents until he passed in 1877. It is thanks to the hard work of Lewis Lemon that Rockford was settled in 1834 and chartered as a city in 1852. He worked hard for Rockford, but more importantly, for himself to become a free man in the United States before the Civil War. Lewis Lemons' story is one that tells us not only how Rockford was founded but how much we can overcome and accomplish in our lives. If he could be born a slave, find a great city, and die a free man, our obstacles can be overcome and we can reach our goals. That is why I am proud to recognize Lewis Lemon as a founder of Rockford during this Black History Month. Thank you so much."
