This past Sunday I was invited to the DuPage County Historical Museum for an extraordinary program titled 'Recognizing Trailblazers: Confident and Courageous Women Who Have Shaped DuPage'. This program honored several distinguished veterans and community leaders who have helped shape the history of our county. And I was really deeply moved to hear some of the stories of these exceptional women. The women that were honored on Sunday were Military Police Officer Sonia Falk. She is a mother, a community volunteer. She served 13 years in the United States Army and was awarded 8 Army commendations. Four Noncommissioned Officer of the Month awards, expert marksmanship, and a combat service medal for military service. Lieutenant Colonel Mary Reed, a retired R.N., mother, grandmother, who served 20 years in the United States Air Force. She was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon. And this woman founded the Confident and Courageous Women's Program, a recovery group for women veterans that is gaining national attention. This empowerment group, which Sonya founded on the idea that, by working to improve our communities, we develop confidence in ourselves as leaders and gain the courage to raise our voices on behalf of our neighbors and ourselves as well. The women veterans in these programs develop programs on their own, finding ways to align their own personal interests and beliefs with the needs of the communities that they live in. And as part of that program, they learn a wide range of skills that equip them to be strategic thinkers and effective advocates for their chosen program. Through her work with Confident and Courageous, Sonya has supported women veterans as they have made important contributions to their communities through a wide range of volunteer activities, including book clubs, equine therapy, community gardens, and a support system to one another. Today the man that almost all of you willing, and often times repeatedly, voted to give the power of the Speaker's gavel is being indicted on charges tied to the abuse of that power. There are Bills this Legislative Session that you could've put your names on to prove that you're willing to be a real voice for change. Instead, all those Bills have been blocked. How about House Bill 2559, trying to end aldermanic privilege? Aldermanic privilege on zoning has been the repeated source of pay-to-play scandals in Illinois for decades. The Madigan indictment specifically names Alderman A's position as Chairman of the Committee on Zoning, Landmarks and Building Standards as part of the Madigan conspiracy. The indictment specifically says that Alderman A said about Company C, in connection with zoning and permit approvals, 'I think they understand how this works. You know, the quid pro quo, the quid pro quo.' Madigan said, 'Okay, very good.' You want to end the corrupt quid pro quo with zoning? You can start by ending aldermanic privilege. Here's another issue raised by federal indictments and guilty pleas. Red light cameras. That legislation says that you can't use your campaign funds to defend yourself in a civil corruption case or a criminal case. It got assigned to a committee and the Democratic Chairman refused to let it come forward for a vote. I ask everyone in this chamber to join me in standing for real reform and ending practices that have brought massive corruption and scandal to our state. Today should be a new day. Well, let's disband the old ways, let's… that have giving political insiders all of this power and privilege and personal gain. Personal gain for a select few at the expense of the people of Illinois. Those on the other side of the aisle, I'd like to ask you to join these Bills as a cosponsor. You're not even actually paying attention. You're just chattering amongst themselves, which is probably, again, part of the problem we see in Illinois. You see, Mercy Hospital has been serving the black and brown community for 100 plus years. This hospital accepts anyone, no matter if they could pay or not. And so, Representative Mah and I stood in the midst of COVID, sacrificed our health, to keep this hospital open. In rain, sleet, and snow. I also want to thank Representative Ammons, who drove hours to stand with me, as well as Leader Harris. And I want to thank this Body for your calls to continue to fight to keep Mercy Hospital open. You see everyone deserves, in this great state, to have quality health care. And our safety nets and our critical access hospitals are under attack. And so, I ask this Body to work alongside of me to make sure that we do not have any hospital closures in this great State of Illinois. And so, again, I thank this Body for your support. On Monday I celebrated the fact that Insight Hospital, that took over for Mercy, is now allowing ambulances to come to that hospital. We have Representatives today from the Prairie Band of the Potawatomi Tribe. They've been working with me on a Resolution related to the area around the Village of ShaHona in southern DeKalb County in my district and some of the federal action that was taken over 170 years ago where the Federal Government sold land improperly. Unfortunately, these guests now belong to a group that no one wants to belong to. They were here representing the wives of those who have lost their police officer spouses in the line of duty. Many of you may remember me speaking on the floor just a few short months ago about the murder of a police officer in my district. Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic was killed in the line of duty while on a routine police call and her partner was seriously wounded. Lyn Stua, the wife of Bradley Sergeant Rittmanic, was with us today. Along with Lyn is Amber Oberheim, widow of Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim, and their daughters Hannah, Avery, and Addison, and Aubree who wasn't able to be with us here today. Linsey Timmins, widow of Pontoon Beach Officer Tyler Timmins. And Dee Landers, widow of University of Illinois Lieutenant Aaron Landers, as well as many other family members and friends. The people that you saw in that press conference here today are the faces of the impact of the flawed laws that have been passed in the undercover of the night during last year's lame duck Session. We must do better by these people, by their loved ones, and by all of the citizens of this great state. "Thank you. I would ask the Body to join me in reaching out to our Federal Legislators. Earlier this week, President Joe Biden had decided, rightfully so, to stop ordering Russian oil, which was a wonderful idea a bit late into the game. Illinois, for all of us that are unaware, has the second largest number in miles of pipeline in the country. Only second behind California. We need to open our domestic energy production immediately to drive down gas prices. Clean energy does not mean cleaning out the wallets of working families, which is what this four, five, and six dollar a gallon gas is doing. We can do both. We can walk and chew gum at both… at the same time. I am incredibly frustrated that our Federal Legislators do not understand that the Russian economy, 60 to 70 percent, is based on the price of a barrel of oil. Everything we do to drive up a barrel of oil makes the Russian economy wealthier, more embolden to invade NATO countries. So, please reach out to your Federal Legislators, ask them to open the pipelines now. We are not a third world country. We are blessed with resources. To not use those resources is harming working families and the lower-income families in Illinois. So, please join me in sensible energy regulation and demand our Federal Legislators and our Presidents open the pipelines now to help Ukraine to drive down a barrel of oil to harm Russia and to help our working families in Illinois.
