"Thank you. I have two really special guests with me today that I would I love to introduce. We have my sister Carol Widegren, who is visiting here from Glenview, Illinois. Her State Representative is Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz. Carol had a long career as a Chicago public school teacher, and she is also the scientist in the family. So, some of my earliest memories are her dissecting random things at our kitchen table and teaching me how to clean fish and showing me that heart keeps beating when you cut that fish open. She has a master's degree in environmental science and has also done some really cool things like SUE the T. rex at the Field Museum, she wrote the curriculum for that for school visitors. And she also has written curriculum for the Art Institute and currently works with the nation's report card testing system. Also, a long- time member of the AFL-CIO and just somebody I am so super proud of and has worked with the Friends of the Chicago River also on environmental cleanups and things. She is the reason why I love and adore teachers and support them and why I believe in science. And she's just my amazing big sister. And then we have Mason Fuchs who is Carol's granddaughter and my great-niece, which is hard for me to say because it makes me sound really old. Mason is in the fourth grade. She's 10 years old. "Last week my constituent Elise Malary was pulled out of Lake Michigan. Elise was a shining example of what we want people to do and be in our community. She was part of our community on the North Side. She was dedicated to uplifting the people that she lived and worked with every day. She is one of too many black trans women whose lives mean nothing to the man on the other side of this room. She is one of many transgender youth who are at an increased risk of suicide because of the actions of people like the man that just spoke. I've watched for years as my colleague has tormented trans youth in his community. And the brave young woman who stood up to that behavior is now my constituent as well. And to every trans youth out there listening, to every parent who loves and affirms their children as God gave them to them, that's not happening here in Illinois. We will not follow in the footsteps of states that are tormenting these families and driving them away. We will embrace our youth, we will protect our youth, and we will work together to solve the epidemic of murders and suicides among trans women in our community. Because we actually love and care for people as God made them. I don’t want to hear anymore hate speech on this floor. Not from anyone. And if we can only do one thing to honor Elise Malary's memory, it's to do that. Hate speech does not belong on this floor. Not now, not ever."

"Thank you, Madam Speaker. Today I rise to honor the lives of true… two extraordinary women from my church community of St. Nicholas Church of Evanston. They both left a deep and lasting impact not only on their family and neighborhoods but also on the broader community and the many lives they touched through their professions, community service, and activism. Marion Flynn of Evanston passed away on October 8, 2021. Born in Holbrook, Massachusetts in 1952, she attended Catholic schools and later earned her bachelor's degree in theology and English. She moved to Chicago, earned her MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and went on to work as a corporate banker for 33 years, working her way up to the rank of Senior Vice President of Bank of America. Marion was committed to helping others and well known for her volunteerism. She donated countless hours to a number of nonprofits including Meals on Wheels, the YWCA Evanston, the Illinois Holocaust Museum and 10200088.docx 21  STATE OF ILLINOIS 102nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 88th Legislative Day 3/22/2022 Education Center, and Open Communities: Fair Housing Agency. She served on several boards, including connections for abused women and their children, and the United Way of Evanston. A trailblazer in the workplace and in the community, Marion also worked with passion in our church community. She felt called to the priesthood and advocated for women to be ordained in the Catholic Church for many years. She also believed in integrating social activism and Catholic religious traditions by helping the poor, combating social injustice, and reforming social structures. Marion planted a seed for an entire younger generation of women to work to advocate for women in the Catholic Church. While she was not ordained as a priest, she truly lived a life of service and charity. Marion was a member of St. Nicholas Church for more than 30 years, where she served as church treasurer, door greater, lector, and trainer of lectors, parish council member, finance council member. She also cofounded our church's LGBTQ ministry. Marion stood outside the doors of the church before every mass to great people as they arrived. She truly embodied the church hymn All Are Welcome. Another extraordinary woman, Dr. Marjorie Ruth Fujara, passed away on October 19, 2021. Born in 1964, Marjorie was a graduate of St. Juliana's in Resurrection High School in Chicago where she received her… and she received her BA from the University of Illinois in Champaign and her medical degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago. She completed her pediatric residency at the University of Minnesota. Marjorie was board certified in both pediatrics and child abuse pediatrics and a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. 10200088.docx 22  STATE OF ILLINOIS 102nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 88th Legislative Day 3/22/2022 As a pediatrician with Stroger Hospital in Cook County, she served as acting director of the Division of Child and Family Wellness and medical director of the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center. She was recognized by… with many awards for her work with victims of child abuse and family violence. An activist at heart, Marjorie was a tireless advocate for the rights of children. She worked endlessly to prevent all forms of violence that affected the most vulnerable in our communities, children, low income, and marginalized people. She worked to prevent shaken baby syndrome through educating about the period of purple crying and advocated for effective parenting techniques through policies such as the 'no hit zone'. She was passionate about social justice, including gun violence prevention, and never failed to speak up to educate others on the issue. Even in the face of life's challenges and bitter hardships, Marjorie always remained positive and helpful. She was an eternal optimist and looked for the good in everything. Earlier this year, this Body, we passed Resolutions mourning the deaths of Marion and Marjorie and offered condolences to their family members and friends. As we celebrate Women's History Month, I would like us, here together, to celebrate and honor the lives and work of these two remarkable women but also to reflect on and celebrate the women who are change makers, history makers, and trailblazers in each of our districts throughout Illinois. Because it is truly like… women like Marion and Marjorie who move our communities towards a more just and fair society through their steadfast work and passionate service to others.
