And she is joined with… by her parents, Keri and Dan, who are up in the gallery. If we could wave to them. And Dan is a member of the city board in Caseyville in my district. Danielle, I apologize, this might take a few minutes. She's a sophomore at Collinsville High School. She's recently received the Congressional Award Gold Medal, which is the highest level of congressional recognition available to civilian youth. It requires participants to demonstrate a commitment to their personal growth and to community development. They have to actively engage with their work for two years. It takes a minimum of 400 hours of public service, 200 hours of physical fitness, and a 5-day expedition. She started work on this award at just age 13 in 2020, which is the youngest that you can enter that program. Some of the things that she's done, she taught herself the ukulele, completed scuba diving certification, earned a second degree black belt in Taekwondo. She also volunteered with the Caseyville Library and the Disabled American Veterans, and the Girl Scouts. She had an expedition to the Caribbean nation of Curacao, where she hiked and scuba dived to familiarize herself with the landscape, history, and culture of the island. In addition, she has completed her Girl Scout Gold Award by partnering with a local hospital library to introduce new sensory activities for pediatric therapy patients and sensory-friendly events for Collinsville residents. She's also about to complete her Presidential Volunteer Service Award, which will require an additional hundred service hours. If that's not enough, as I said, she's a sophomore in high school. "Today… earlier today I was joined by some other emerging leaders, young women who are the state championship IHSA Competitive Dance Division for the 1A State of Illinois Dance Division. They… unfortunately, they had to… because we started a little bit later today, they had to get back to school. So, they're not in the gallery with us, but I wanted to take the time to recognize them. This is… this is the first time that… that dance has been an IHSA sport. So, it's exciting to have a… an IHSA championship dance team. But for years, they've been competing in the IDTA State Finals. My sister was a… a state champion with the Jacksonville J'ettes for four years. And they continued that as well this year with a championship IDTA State Finals. So, we've got some amazing athletes coming out of Jacksonville. I know some of them are going to continue their dance careers after college. One of those individuals, Leah Hoffman, who's on the State Champion Jacksonville J'ettes, was named Miss IDTA, which is an award given to the top soloist by the Illinois Drill Team Association. Leah's been dancing probably just about since she's been… since she was born, and she's going to continue on at Indiana University on their dance team. Unfortunately, as I said, they can't be here 'cause they had to head back to school, but if we can still give them a round of applause, I would really appreciate that because it's well deserved. And… and I have one more point of personal privilege, and this one will be really short. On Sunday, I celebrated my grandfather's 100th birthday. He's from the greatest generation, served in Europe in World War II, Purple Heart, just an amazingly kind and caring individual, and I want to wish him a happy birthday." It is the final day to pay your federal and state taxes, which funds and finances all the programs that we sponsor off this floor. Our forefathers felt so strongly about taxation, they created a new nation, but look where we are now. "Thank you, Madam Speaker. Today, I have the sad duty to rise and speak in remembrance of not one but two fallen heroes who gave their lives in service to others. Firefighters risk their lives every day to rescue those who are having the worst day of their lives. Since 1858, the brave members of the Chicago Fire Department have embodied their motto, 'We're there when you need us.' Carrying out this invaluable public duty has a cost. This cost is never light, but sometimes it is especially crushing. Tragically, this is one of those times. In the early morning hours of Tuesday, April 4, Firefighter Jermaine Pelt died in the line of duty battling a fire in the West Pullman neighborhood that destroyed one house and damaged two others. Firefighter Pelt courageously stayed at his post, even as the fire worsened to the point that firefighters were ordered to evacuate the building. He fell just before he was able to get out of the building. A Navy veteran of Desert Storm, a 26- year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department, Lieutenant Tchoryk literally spent and gave his whole life in the service of others. Those who step forward selflessly to serve our state and our communities are the best of us. When they pay the ultimate price, it is left to us to keep their honored memories alive. It is left to each of us to live in a way that is worthy of these sacrifices. Jermaine Pelt and Jan Tchoryk embodied a standard of a courage, high ideals, and strength of character to which we all should aspire. This has been a horrendous two weeks for the Chicago Fire Department and Local 2, and I ask that you keep them in your prayers. And I would ask for a moment of silence." "Thank you, Madam Speaker. I would like to take a moment today to recognize that it is Yom HaShoah, the Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day. Today is a day where people across the world remember the victims of the Holocaust and honor their memory. The victims included 6 million Jews, hundreds of thousands of people with disabilities, Romani and gay men, and millions of allied forces and civilians who fought against and suffered under Nazi rule. Today, we remember these victims and we mourn their untimely death, but on Yom HaShoah, we also remember the heroes. During the Holocaust, heroism came in many forms by many people who oftentimes risked everything to save the lives of people who they didn't even know. People like Irena Sendler, a Polish social worker who famously smuggled Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto, provided them with new identifications, and secured their shelter with Polish families. Even after she was arrested, imprisoned, and tortured by the Gestapo, Irena Sendler never revealed the locations where she placed these Jewish children. And all the ordinary people who risked their own lives by allowing Jews to hide in their attics and in their basements as the Nazis went door to door hunting for Jews. Those ordinary people, they were heroes. And the Jewish mothers and fathers who held their children's hands and comforted them as they walked together into the gas chambers, yes, they were victims, but I think they were heroes too. There are people in the world today who still need heroes. And when we say phrases like 'never again', that's not merely a remembrance, it's a call to action. There are people who need heroes in our own country and in our communities. This Resolution pays honor and respect to a truly great individual who served my district and our community and, in doing so, made the ultimate sacrifice. This Resolution is set to honor and designate the 315 Overpass on I-57 as the 'Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic Memorial Highway'. Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic of the Bradley Police Department gave her life in the line of duty on December 30, 2021. She and her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, who was seriously wounded by a gunshot wound and is still recovering and working on his recovery today, were responding to a nuisance call of a dog barking at a local hotel when they were brutally attacked and shot. Sergeant Rittmanic did not survive. Sergeant Rittmanic was a 21-year law enforcement veteran. She began her career as a deputy with the Iroquois County Sheriff Department in 2000. She joined the Bradley Police Department on February 13, 2007, where she was promoted to sergeant on September 2, 2014. Sergeant Rittmanic was widely recognized as a leader in the community policing. She was known for her ability to speak to members of the community with respect while meeting them where they were in their life, understanding their true needs, and working together with them to find a solution. Sergeant Rittmanic was awarded the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2020 in recognition to her commitment to the Bradley and Kankakee County communities. And PFC Kick served with the 1st Marine Division, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, H&S Company. And whereas, from February 13 through February 23, 1968, the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines were engaged with heavily-armed and well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army forces as part of the Tet Offensive in the City of Hue, South Vietnam. "Thank you, Madam Speaker. House Joint Resolution 12 seeks to designate the Utica River Bridge in LaSalle County as 'Ralph E. Snell Memorial Bridge'. I'll just say, Private First Class Snell was a member of the 136th Infantry, the 33rd Division of the U.S. Army. He entered service in 1942 and was stationed at various camps in the United States. Private First Class Snell was in various war campaigns, including New Guinea and the Philippine Campaign and returned to the United States November 4, 1945, honorably discharged in '45. The Resolution seeks to honor Private First Class Ralph Snell for his combat efforts. On May 6, 1945, the 136th Infantry was met with heavy mortar, machine gun, and rifle fire from flanks and the caves on the reverse slopes. As it reached the crest of the hill, a machine gun on the right flank opened and wounded four men. Private First Class Snell moved forward alone and destroyed the weapon and its crew and directed his fellow soldiers, destroying three Japanese strong points. Although wounded himself, he led his soldiers forward and secured enemy positions, captured the hill, and only allowed him… and only allowed himself to be evacuated when the rest of them were out.
