American Indian leaders from all over the state and in neighboring states have traveled to Springfield to bring awareness and advocate for issues directly affecting their community. I'd like to welcome the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative, Tunica Biloxi Tribe, and Prairie Band Potawatomi. As an American history teacher, I know our country and state have perpetuated a multitude of injustices and oppression towards Indigenous people. I rise today to recognize and congratulate the Rochester High School football team for capturing their ninth state championship title in their program history. The Rochester Rockets went 14 and 0 in an undefeated season and winning the state championship against St. Laurence High School with a final score of 59 to 38. Another point of recognition. This the first time in school history the freshman, junior varsity, and varsity football teams all went undefeated and were conference champions in the same season. The team's coach, Derek Leonard, is a true inspiration for these athletes. His dedication and commitment to Rochester football team reflects the values he's distilled into the players to never stop chasing their dreams on and off the field. "Thank you. Good afternoon. Today, I'd like to rise to talk about the Black History Month honor and recognition of… of individuals who have contributed to our great country. Today, I wish to honor Percy and Anna Julian, a husband and wife who are an important part of the history here in Illinois, here in my hometown of Oak Park, where they have made a significant difference in all of the sciences across the world. A little bit about Mr. Julian. Percy Julian, born in 18… thank you, Mr. Speaker. Percy Julian, born in 1899, was one of the most important chemists in our nation history. He worked at the Glidden Company in Chicago and later his own lab in Julian Laboratories in Franklin Park. He worked to synthesize new drugs, where he led a serious medical breakthroughs. Drugs that address many of the medications that allow us to receive treatment for glaucoma… glaucoma and also many of the hormonal issues that are… many of us are dealing with here in our great state. These drugs allowed us to have wide availability to make sure that we are well and our issues are addressed. He also was the first black chemist inducted into the National Academy of Sciences and the second black scientist inducted in the National Academy of Sciences. But he was not alone. His loved one, his wife, had a lot to do with his success and also her own success. Anna Johnson Julian, born in 1901, was the first black woman to earn her PhD in psychologies, where she received her degree in 1937 from the University of Pennsylvania. After working for a decade in D.C. as a researcher, she gained… she joined her husband in Chicago where she was civic activist and founder of the Julian Laboratories along with her husband, Percy. They both served the… served in the country… served in the company throughout its entirety. She served as the vice president. In 1950, the Julians moved to Oak Park, where I also lived and attended school. And I'm very proud to say that they have a wonderful home that we are restoring in Oak Park as a… as a museum for you to see all of their good work. At this time, as you know, there were few, very few, black people living in Oak Park, but they were making a difference and being great neighbors to many. They were very supportive of many of the progress that was happening in our great city here in Chicago. Even before they moved to Oak Park, the property was bombed. We… we wanted to make sure… the family wanted to make sure that in restoring the property that they will… will be able to sustain the riches and the information that they have provided to our great country and our great city around the sciences. Despite these racial attacks on their homes and their property, the family sustained theirselves in Oak Park, and their daughter remains in that location today. It is important to know that because of the tenacity and what they have brought to the community, Oak Park has named their middle school after Percy Julian and is titled Julian Middle School. And this family, who has pioneered not only in Illinois but throughout our country, has made history, has made black history.
