"Let us pray. Most holy and wise Father, we meet here as State Government today to face seemingly insoluble problems - be they social, fiscal, economic. We know that the demand for schools and roads and other public services is expanding faster than their ability to obtain additional funds. In communities all over this Nation, the debate goes on. How can more money be raised? How can we share responsibilities? How can we out run the sources of revenue? We ask that these perplexed questions be answered in the light of Your goodness. As each person here is Your son, Your daughter, enlighten their understanding, place the answers within their reach, within their being. We do not think that the doctrine of self-interest is too heavy for us, as we profess it, in America. It is self-evident that all other parts of the whole are held together by Your wisdom, Your love. The great truth of this Assembly and this country, the great men and women of this House are instructed according to Your will as to what to do for they are ministers of Yours. Now, we ask that You instruct them through all the hazards implied or whatever, all the self-sacrifice, all the instinctive virtues that are necessary for carrying on the great work of this great state. However, there is the possibility that the Senate would pass the Bill under consideration tonight. If they were to pass the Bill, I would expect that they would not pass the Bill until an hour or an hour and a half from now. It would take us a certain amount of time to process the paper work in order for the Bill to be considered here in the House tonight on the Order of Concurrence. And so, it is my suggestion that we adjourn and return at 10:00 a.m. in the morning. So, if there is Senate action on the Bill, we will be in a position in the morning to proceed to consideration Daniels." of those Amendments.
Representative Daniels: "I would concur with what you have suggested. And I would also add that for the Republican Members we will have a Conference when we have something from the Senate, if it ever comes over here. This is what happens when we try to let the Senate lead on an issue. And having said that, I would offer just some concerns about the present posture of the legislation, absent in a meaningful Arlington Park relief, absent in a meaningful reform at McCormick Place, absent any other items that the people of Illinois have a right to expect, that it is very possible we may be here for an awful long time. And Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the Republicans, we'll stay until the job is done and done right. We've done it before. We'll do it again. We're here to work. As soon as that opportunity is afforded by the Majority Party, we will work."
