During recent years as the whole world is undergoing fundamental transformation following the demise of the former Soviet Union and the end to the Cold War, we in the Republic of China and Taiwan have made important progress in political democratization, economic liberalization, social pluralization, as well as diplomatic pragmatization. Internationally we have been playing an active and constructive role by providing humanitarian aid, economic cooperation and tactical assistance to many needy countries around the globe. For instance, we have made donations to seven midwestern states of the United States, including Illinois, to help with their respective flood relief efforts last year. Now, based on the common aspiration of the 21 million people in Taiwan, we wish to seek proper recognition from, and make more contribution to, the world community by joining in major international organizations, such as GATT and the United Nations. I would like to take this opportunity to express on behalf of our people in Taiwan, the Republic China, our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Speaker Madigan and all the Members of this House of Representatives for your strong support for our bid to rejoin the United Nations by passing a Resolution on March 2nd this year. We, in the Republic of China, will forever remember and treasure your fine gesture of friendship.
