"Thank you, Speaker. Although my name was not mentioned by a previous speaker, I think that it was my conduct that was at issue. The reason that I tend to treat people in 2 STATE OF ILLINOIS 89TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 9th Legislative Day January 31, 1995 the Chair in a gender neutral way really started with what happened in the United States Supreme Court when, with the addition of a female justice, the adjective Madam or Mr. was dropped from the vocabulary. And I think there is a lot to be said for getting rid of gender specific terms. One of the reasons, of course, I voted against the Rules that were adopted by this chamber is that, I think the rules went several steps backward by demanding gender specific addresses to whoever might be the occupant of the Chair. So, my behavior was a reflection of what we were allowed to do in the last Session and I considered it a step forward for equality for justice, just as the Supreme Court had done some six years ago."
