I want to be very specific on two items. One, some of you may have received correspondence on this particular Bill indicating that some consumer groups had problems with one section of the Bill. That section has been removed. The consumer group is now in support of the Bill. I know of no opposition to the Bill and we believe, as a result, that Conference Committee Report is now acceptable. They had a concern having to do with whether existing language in the statute would require the same kinds of safeguards in the case of a gift and, since I had not heard from them, my understanding was that they read it as we read it, which is that it would require those safeguards."

For the first two years that I served as a Member of the House, which for most of you is ancient history, Ira Colitz sat right behind me and I have to say that they were two of the most enjoyable years of my life, because for those of you who 13 STATE OF ILLINOIS 90TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 87th Legislative Day February 4, 1998 knew Ira, you knew that he was a Damon Runyon character of the first order, and that he could captivate people with his personality and his wit and his jovial attitude toward life and this could carry on for hour, after hour, after hour. And so, those were two wonderful years for me. He did not make it through the next primary, and went on to a later career in Cook County government. He was a constant companion of George Dunn, former Member of the House, former Majority Leader of the House and a long-time president of the Cook County Board in Cook County. He left his mark wherever he went and he was the type of person where you would walk down a street on the north side of Chicago in the Streatorville neighborhood and one doorkeeper after another would know Mr. Colitz, and of course he would slip them $5, why not? You know, if they acknowledged him, slip them... what he would call a little gracious gesture. So, he was a wonderful person and he contributed a great deal to Chicago, to the Legislature, to Cook County and for those who knew him, he will live forever in their memory as a wonderful, wonderful person and I move for the adoption of the Resolution."

"Thank you, Speaker. I, too, would just briefly like to offer my sincere support for this Resolution and my condolences to Ira's many friends and family. I am one who did consider Ira Colitz a mentor. But anyway, Ira Colitz was a very dear friend of mine and over the years, after they've gone by, I would meet Ira and George Dunn at local restaurants, and he always, never forgot me, at election time would send me a check. I won't tell you how much, but he always would send me a check until up to now or where he is now deceased and I just wanted to give my condolences to his family and remind all of you that Ira was down here but he told me he served one term and he said, 'I can't take it down here, I'm going to quit,' and I often thought of that, but I never did quit and so all I can say is my deepest condolences of the family. Ira was a wonderful man and he sure is going to be missed in Chicago."
