"First of all, I want to thank Speaker Madigan, Representative Daniels, and Representative Schoenberg for having me here today. It's definitely an honor for me and my family to be down here. Although, I'm much more comfortable in that than standing up here talking to you all, I'll try it. I'll give it a shot. I started skating when I was four years old. My parents took me over to the rink and put me in white skates. Every little girl should be wearing white skates, and I guess I sat down in the 14  STATE OF ILLINOIS 90TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 100th Legislative Day March 23, 1998 middle of the ice and refused to skate and threw a super tantrum until they'd give me black skates like my brother, so. So, I guess that's the beginning of my hockey career. It had less to do with wearing... it had less to do with playing hockey and more to do with wearing the right color skates, but I grew up the only girl on my teams playing hockey and, I mean, I never saw it that way. I just saw myself as another hockey player and luckily I had teammates and coaches who saw it the same way. But, it did make for some interesting stories. I think I was twelve years old and we were playing a game out in Rolling Meadows and I had covered the puck and I was down on my knees and I, you know, my head was down and somebody came in and slashed me after the whistle and so, you know, being the big, tough girl that I am, I stood up and I pushed this guy and looked up and he was probably, at least a foot taller and probably a hundred pounds heavier, and we just both started laughing. It was the most ridiculous thing ever, it was really funny. I think. When I was in high school, playing for my boys team, we went to a tournament. It was either in Minnesota or in Canada, I don't remember, but I went into the bathroom to change my clothes and there was the cheerleading team from the opposite team in there, and they were getting all done for the game and they kind of looked at me real strange, and I looked at them, and one of them finally said, 'Where's the rest of them?' and I said, 'Them, like them who? What are you talking about?' And she looked at me like totally, you know, surprised, and she says, 'You mean your team only brought one cheerleader?' She thought it was totally preposterous that our team had only brought one cheerleader. So, I just kind of laughed and said, 'Yep, just me.' But, so I played hockey through high school and then I went to two years at Dartmouth and I made the team in August of '96. So, I played the national team for two years and, you know, it gets easier and easier to put off school. I don't know when I'm going to go back, maybe in the fall. But, my parents won't like to hear that, you can see, oh, don't say that. But, the Olympics was great. We were over in Japan for about a month. We got to the Olympic Village about a week before the games started and it was a good thing, because there's so much excitement and so much energy at the Olympic Village. I mean, when we got there, there's, you want to meet all the other athletes. You want to go to the, you know, see what your dining situation is going to be like. You want to go to the Post Office and get cards for friends and change money, and go to the gift shop, and over in Japan, they massage your head for like an hour before you get your hair cut, so, everyone had to get their hair cut before the games and the embroidery shop, all that. And so, we did that. Ran around for about two days until we got totally exhausted and realized that that wasn't our focus. So, we kind of had a team meeting and brought everybody together and and then we went undefeated for the tournament. So, that was a good time, for sure. Everyone asks what it feels like, you know, to win a gold medal and I always joke when I hear that, because I have, it's so hard to describe, you know. I mean, we should get a poet to go over there and win and then they can write about it. But, it's, the way I try to describe it is joy, excitement, you know, energy verging on mass hysteria. Just total happiness and at the same time, contentment and total calm in accomplishing a dream. And so, somebody's got to put that to words, I don't know who 16  STATE OF ILLINOIS 90TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 100th Legislative Day March 23, 1998 it's going to be. But, and then, the unexpected aftermath, I mean, since we've been home there's been so much support and letters from people. Little kids coming to the door. They're the best. You know, they come to the door with little presents and one of them, he had to have been about seven years old, came with a bottle of champagne. You know, and one girl wrote me a card, and she said, you know, 'Congratulations. We watched the game. Can I have your autograph?' And at the bottom it said, 'P.S. You should really keep this letter because someday I'm going to be President of the United States and you'll want to have it.' So, although I'll never be President, I wish all you guys luck in that endeavor. But, it's been a lot of fun, I mean... How has my life changed after the Olympics, that's another big one, and we definitely get to fly around a lot. I've even got to fly in first class every once in a while. It's really big up there and they give you warm nuts instead of the packaged ones and always asking if you want something to drink. It's great. And then this jacket, I wear it all the time. I don't think I'm ever not in it. So, those are the two big differences, but, I don't know. It's really an honor to be here and I just want to thank everybody again for listening and... or Representative Schoenberg for having me and Representative Daniels and thanks."
