The past summer I had the honor of traveling with my friend, the noted journalist, Bill Kurtis, to South America, where he filmed a documentary on the Cofan Indians. This area of the world is one of the most profoundly beautiful and unspoiled regions I've ever seen. And under the leadership of Randy Borman, the Cofan are creating innovative programs building toward a solid base for conservation to preserve the biological riches the region has to offer. As the son of linguists, Randy is equally comfortable at home and in the Cofan culture. His goal is quite simple. The goal of the Cofans is to help preserve this native culture and to keep the large expanses of forests intact for the Cofan Indians. For his leadership, courage, and efforts, the Field Museum, our own Field Museum in Illinois, their founders' council presented Randy Borman with the Parker-Gentry Award in 1998. Illinois is, indeed, fortunate to have the Field Museum and the Museum is equally fortunate to work with pioneer leaders today, such as today's guest, Randy Borman. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, will you welcome our own Chief, Randy Borman, of the Cofan Indians."
"Thank you, Lee. It's a real privilege to be here and it's a real privilege to have been able to get to know Lee Daniels this last summer when he came down to visit us. We took him out in a very, very different environment than this and I think managed to show him a little bit of our world and now he's kind of getting me back, I think, bringing me up here. Yes, my great-grandfather came across from Germany and settled in Illinois and married an Illinois girl here and had their brood of Bormans back in the... right at the turn of the last century. And so, we had very solid Illinois roots. As I was growing up, we'd... my parents would... I was born in Ecuador. My parents were missionaries down in Ecuador and then living with the Cofans. And we would come back here about every four or five years and spend a year here in Illinois. So, I wound up spending quite a bit of time here. As I grew up, I got more and more involved with the people my parents were working with, the Cofan people. I spoke Cofan from the time I was a little baby and then once I got a little older, started really working on some of the issues for the survival of this group that's down in the Amazon basin. There's about 1,000 people altogether, dealing with about a million acres of rain forest. We got involved in a number 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 92ND GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 24th Legislative Day March 13, 2001 of initiatives such as ecotourism, various conservation programs. We became involved with the Field Museum about four years ago and have been working very, very closely with them on a number of conservation initiatives aimed at studying the rain forest, working on the conservation plans for this area that is really, really crucial to the rest of the world. And just in the past couple of years, we've been dealing with alternatives for the Plan Columbia initiative that the U. S. is involved in at the moment, as it spills across into the Ecuadorian side of the border. About half of the Cofan people originally lived on the Columbian side and have been largely forced across into the Ecuadorian side because of the violence occurring over there, as it's escalated, especially in the last few months. We're also trying to find alternatives to things like the Ecotourism Projects, which are really, really shaky right now because of the violence right across... you know, only 40 or 50 miles north of where we're at. And so, we're very, very involved in that. It's a great opportunity to be able to be here. We're on a... right now, we're on a trip around to several locations in the U.S., working on fundraising for eduction and land acquiring, and also for alternatives to the whole Plan Columbia problems that are occurring right now. So, it's just a real privilege to be here. And I appreciate, deeply, the opportunity to say 'hi' to you all from Ecuador. That's a longways from Illinois, but we've still got those strong memories and strong roots up here. And it's just a real privilege. Thank you."
