House Resolution 979 endorses the changing of the Federal Meat Inspection Act to allow state-inspected meat in poultry… poultry plants to ship their products across state lines, in this state and any other state where equal to state-inspection programs operate. Currently, the State of Illinois exceeds the… the federal standards for meat inspection, but they still are not allowed to ship their product across state lines. “Actually, this… this Resolution or this idea came from a local meat processing plant in my district. It’s a small plant and they’re near that state line of Indiana. There’s people that would like to have their meat processed at this plant, but under… under current law they’re not allowed to go across state lines. So…”
“Well, the reason why I bring up the fishing industry, yesterday in the U.S. Today… the reason I bring up this… the issue of the fishing industry is yesterday in the U.S. Today newspaper there was a report that lar… lar… fairly substantial quantities of fish that are sold in a number of states, Illinois being one of them, may be mislabeled and we’re actually paying premium price for not premium fish. Now, that, I think, is a concern to the consumers of this state. And would that in anyway be involved in your Resolution, so that some of that protection could be afforded?”
