“Ladies and Gentlemen of the House, last week when we were home with our communities and with our families and friends, the hope and promise of two young girls ended violently. Starkesia Reed, 14, was killed in a spray of gunfire that killed her in her home as she waited to go to school. Siretha White, 10, was shot in the head at home while her and her family were waiting to cut cake to celebrate her birthday. Two children at home, two families whose lives have changed forever. I rise today simply because before soon we will be dealing with the measure that will rid the state of guns like the ones that killed these children. The Leadership in the Senate has decided to turn its back on this issue for this year, but soon we’ll be voting on this issue, each of us will make a decision. And today I rise simply to say this.
