"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. Members of the General Assembly, thank you for your attention. This is Black History Month, and we take this opportunity to recognize black historians that's gone on before us that's made a difference in our history. You know, we just… less than a month ago, we seated the first black President of the United States, but he would not be able to be where he is today if it wasn't for people like the Tuskegee Airmen. So, I would just like to talk a little… real briefly about the Tuskegee Airmen. They were enlisted soldiers who became America's first black military airmen. They came from all over the country and assisted in the Allied Forces in ending the Terror of Tyrants in World War II. Initially trained as single engine pilots, many later flew twin engine planes or became navigators and bombardiers. Most were college graduates and undergraduates, but others had earned the chance to fly by achieving entry into high test exams. The high academic and aircraft standards would not go up for any of these men. Those who became members of an army air corps were trained not only as pilots, but also as aircraft and engine mechanics, armament specialists, radio repairmen, control tower operators, navigators, bombardiers, and gunnery crews were trained all over the 09600010.doc 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 96th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 10th Legislative Day 2/9/2009 country. Mechanics were trained until 1942 at Chanute Air Base, right here in Illinois in Rantoul. The pilots received their training at the Tuskegee Air Air Field in Tuskegee, Alabama. The first cadet class began in July of '41 and from '42 to '46 944 pilots graduated receiving commissions and their wings. Four hundred and fifty other pilots trained at Tuskegee served overseas during World War II performing missions in North Africa, Italy and Sicily. The airmen of Tuskegee showed the country their bravery, not only in the air, but also when it came to civil rights. The airmen helped usher in a new day in race relations in America doing their part to break down the walls of segregation. Military units during World War II were segregated. Airmen who remained stateside faced racism on a daily basis as highly trained black military officers were treated as trainees and forbidden access in officers' clubs. Upon returning home, the brave pilots who had fought gallantly in the air against the powers, faced harsh criticism… harsh racism as well. They were subjected to limited assignments in upward mobility, but in 1948, President Harry Truman ordered that the U.S. Armed Forces treat servicemen equally and provide equal opportunity for all servicemen leading to the segregation of the military. Today, the Members of the Illinois House of Legislative Black Caucus ask our colleagues to join us in honoring the achievements and the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen after blazing a path of bravery and leadership for others to follow.
