All Members please take your seats and staff retire to the rear of the chamber. We have a very special guest today Dr. Robert Satcher, who is an astronaut with NASA. And for those of you who think that you have a very deep and broad experience and background, I want you to listen to some of this, because this is concerned with Dr. Robert Satcher. He was elected by NASA in May of 2004, in February of 2006 he completed Astronaut Candidate Training. He completed his first space flight on STS-129 in November of 2009 and has logged over 259 hours in space including 12 hours and 19 minutes in space walks. He also held an appointment as an attending physician in Orthopaedic Surgery at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. His educational background would sound very familiar to those of us in the House of Representatives. He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986; a doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering from MIT in 1993; and a doctorate in medicine from Harvard Medical School in 1994. So, we are very, very pleased to have Dr. Satcher with us today. I had an opportunity to speak with him earlier in my office and he's in a position to give us some of his observations and his experiences from outer space. Dr. Satcher."
"Well, thank you. Please take your seats. It's an honor to be here. And I just wanted to thank, Mr. Speaker Madigan and Representative David Miller for inviting me here. It was a tremendous experience traveling into space for the first time in November of last year. I was on the space shuttle Atlantis with a crew of six and I was the only physician on board. Just to give a little bit more of my background, I was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital for four years before beginning astronaut training and so, I actually was notified one day when I was in clinic at Northwestern seeing patients that I had been selected to be an astronaut. It not only came as a shock, because I never thought that I would have the opportunity to do it but also in a certain way it was a bittersweet moment because we had 09600123.doc 4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 96th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 123rd Legislative Day 4/13/2010 of course, grown to love Chicago and Illinois. It'd become our home. Our daughter was actually born here and we realized that as a result of starting astronaut training we were going to probably have to leave and move to Houston, Texas, which we subsequently did. But nonetheless, it's been a wonderful journey. As I was telling Mr. Speaker, it's one of the few experiences in life which exceeds ones expectations. I had a number of prefixed notions of what it would be like to be in outer space and it really did exceed all of my… at least thoughts before going. We took off on a… what… what turned out to be picturesque day in November, November 16 and actually Representative Miller was there for the launch and was able to sort of relay what it was like from the ground. I also, of course, heard a lot from other friends and family. And have subsequently seen the footage of it and it was indeed a very spectacular launch. Sitting on the inside in the space shuttle as you can imagine it was an extremely spectacular experience. Acceleration like I've never experienced before which goes on for eight and half minutes until you get into outer space. Once you are in outer space and traveling at 17,500 miles an hour, it's three days until you rendezvous with the International Space Station. And you basically have to dock the space shuttle to the International Space Station both vehicles moving at exactly the same speeds. There are astronauts who are permanently stationed on the International Space Station and once we got there we became a group of 12 and a crew of 12 instead a crew of 6. I’m officially the 510th person to go into outer space. I think the only other state that’s had more astronauts has been Ohio. So, it's a proud tradition of the state and I'm glad to be a part of it. I also had the special privilege of going out on a space walk and for me that was the most impactful event when you actually go in your space suit outside of the spaceship. It's an uninhibited and unobstructed view of the Earth as well as the space station and the spaceship that you just came up in. So, very awe-inspiring, particularly awe-inspiring is seeing the Earth with the backdrop of space and you know black space as far as you can see. When I saw that, I realized that I was literally looking out into forever. And it also gives you a tremendous appreciation for what we have here on the home planet. To see the Earth with its thin atmosphere which is adherent on the surface of the Earth and you realize that it is very important that we take good care of our home planet. If you're not a believer before you go, you become a believer when you travel. So, I would leave you with the thoughts that… I think going in outer space is something which is a privilege right now. Hopefully, it will become something which is much more commonplace. And we're looking forward to the further words from Washington in terms of how we will continue to explore outer space in the years to come. And you can certainly bet that Illinois will continue to be well represented in space travel and space exploration. So, once again, just wanted to say thank you for having me here and thank you for letting me share my experience.
