I'm going to talk about a young man who was sitting on the curb of Robert Taylor Homes project. A young man is sitting on the curb surrounded by State Police, Chicago Police. And a person returned home and said what could all of this be about? Who has been injured? What happened here today? And when she went up and spoke to the young man he said to her, I had to come back to my roots. 09800097.docx 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 97th Legislative Day 2/19/2014 I'm Governor Patrick Duvall (sic-Deval Patrick) of Massachusetts, but I was born and raised in Robert Taylor Homes in the City of Chicago. Mr. Duvall (Patrick) was born July 31, 1956. He lived in the Robert Taylor Homes with a single mother in the housing projects. He attended a special school because he had been a member of a class called 'Better Chance', a national non-profit organization for identifying, recruiting, and developing leaders among academically gifted minority students. It allowed him to attend Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts. He graduated from the academy and he attended Harvard College. He earned a bachelors at Harvard cum laude; English and American Literature. He then spent a year working with the United Nations in Africa. In 1979, he returned to the United States and he enrolled at Harvard's Law School. While in law school, Patrick was elected a member of Harvard's legal aid bureau. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctorate cum laude. He proceeded to fail the Bar three times. Well, two times; the California Bar twice, and then he took it again and passed on the third time. He was a law clerk for Judge Reinhardt. He won a voting rights case against Bill Clinton, because he worked for the National Association… the legal defense fund of the NAACP. And he won a case against Bill Clinton who was then the Governor of Arkansas. In 1986, he joined a Boston law firm, Hill and Barlow. Today, Patrick Duvall is the Governor of Massachusetts; the first African-American Governor. He was there after Mitt Romney.
