His name is Luke Holtz and he is twelve years old, a sixth grader at St. Patrick's Catholic School in St. Charles. He has served on his school's student council, plays basketball, and is on the math team. He plays both travel basketball and baseball. And his main interests includes history and politics. Members of the Senate, today I have the honor of welcoming the Consul General of the Republic of Korea, Jong-Kook Lee. Consul 12 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 88th Legislative Day 2/6/2018 General Lee moved to Chicago in April of 2016. Before accepting his current position, he served as Minister of the Korean Embassy in both Singapore and Russia. He is also a former Ambassador to Libya. In his time in the Foreign Service, Consul General Lee has served at posts in New Zealand, Egypt, India, and the United Kingdom. Consul General Lee graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in International Relations and continued on to earn a Master's Degree in International Relations from Texas State University. In his role as Consul General for the Republic of Korea in Chicago, he's responsible for thirteen Midwestern states. He works to maintain and strengthen ties between the Midwest and South Korea. Thank you, Mr. President. You can all sit down. We're probably gonna all be speaking to this a little bit. But let me just say that -- this, not all of you got a chance to serve with 14 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 88th Legislative Day 2/6/2018 George Shadid, but those who did and the staff that remember him know that he was one-of-a-kind guy. It's kind of the end of an era of this kind of leadership in Peoria. The other night over at Judge Jim Shadid's house, we had kind of a -- I guess it was the Lebanese version of an Irish wake, 'cause they -- they brought out the Jameson and everybody told stories about -- about George, and -- and the stories were numerous. But what a guy he was, I mean, he came up in -- in Peoria, having just a grade school education. In fact, Jim told a story of -- that he would leave the house every day, his mother thinking he was going to Manual High School, and he'd take and throw his lunch underneath the porch and he'd go off and do whatever, but he never went to high school. And so about after two months of this, his -- his mom finally found all those bags of lunches underneath the porch and -- and called him in on it. But George was just that kind of a guy. I mean, you know, if -- if you were ever around him, you just -- you just knew that he was kind of electrifying. He was one of those people that had the kind of charisma that if he was in the room, you knew he was in the room. Right? You knew he was in the room, because he was everybody's friend. You know, he was a mentor to me, very much so. When he decided to retire, he called me in and said, "You know, Dave, I'm -- I'm -- I think I'm going to retire from the Senate. Are you interested in -- in running for my seat?" And I was, of course, flabbergasted and said, "Yes, absolutely." But he stood right there with me all the way and -- and what I learned from him was -- was really how to appreciate and how to deal with people. About two days before George actually passed away early Saturday morning, President Barack Obama called Jim just to find out how his dad was doing? And that friendship just was -- was so 15 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 88th Legislative Day 2/6/2018 much a part of -- of who George was. I know that Peoria is -- is -- is really going to -- is -- miss him, because he was just one of those people that was -- was a favorite son of Peoria and a friend to everybody. So, thank you for -- for honoring him for his life, and I just want to say, George, I -- thank you for -- for the life you led and for what you meant to me.

Thank you, Mr. President. You know, when you think about it, everybody here, at some point in the future, is going to have a resolution read about them. And so it's always a sad occasion, but I just have to tell you that when I heard about this, as sad as I was, I just broke into a smile thinking about George Shadid. It's true, as Senator Koehler said, many of you didn't serve with him. That's because the average Senator here will only serve for eight years. And George was here, I think, twelve years ago. But if you didn't know him, I just got to tell you, as Senator Koehler said, he was the most unassuming, but he had this phenomenal smile and laugh that just was infectious. Extremely dedicated to his family when he was a Senator and after. And Senator Link reminded me today -- he's in the Chair, so he can't tell the story. For - - for those of you who did serve with him, when he left he gave a speech to the Senate. We -- we were renovating this Chamber, so we were over at the Abraham Lincoln Library and George was giving a speech, and he said, "You know what, excuse me, I have to go to the bathroom." Yeah, right in the middle of his speech, he walked in the back, used the washroom. We stood there and waited for 16 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 88th Legislative Day 2/6/2018 him, then he came back and finished his speech. I don't know if that's reflective of anything other than the fact the guy was just a character and a really good politician, very good politician. Law-and-order guy, having been the sheriff, and just -- just loved in his community. So as I look down and -- and see that he was eighty-eight years old and all these grandchildren, what a great life, and he will be missed.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR LINK) Leader Brady, for what purpose you rise?
Thank you, Mr. President. I, too, just want to stand and say, as one of the Members who was here when Senator Shadid was here, he was a -- a delightful man. We -- our districts neighbored, so we shared some areas, but he was always a guy who I thought set partisan politics aside and worked together to accomplish good things for his area. He is missed here. And for those of you who didn't have a chance to meet him, it's too bad, because he was a true gentleman.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR LINK) Senator Weaver, for what purpose do you rise?
Just to the resolution, Mr. Chairman {sic}. You know, I don't have -- didn't have the honor of working with him here, but, you know, I -- I knew Jimmy since I was a young -- Jim -- I'm sorry, George since I was a young man and knew his sons very well. But you couldn't be more correct. There wasn't -- wasn't a person that didn't enjoy being around him, and from this side of the aisle would have really had a pleasure if had a chance to work with him. You know, our -- our greatest honors are what -- is the legacy we 17 STATE OF ILLINOIS 100th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 88th Legislative Day 2/6/2018 leave our children. I just want to talk about that just for a second. Because his son, Jimmy, was a fraternity brother of mine and had one of the greatest senses of humor, which I know he got from his father. And I just shared a few of the jokes with my seatmate here that I'm not going to share with you, but he had some great stories I remember today, thirty-some years later, forty-some years later. We also law clerked together. Just a tremendous young man. His son, Jimmy, is a federal judge now. But I was going to also address his son, Georgie, who I know his daughter very well, and George and I -- Georgie and I raised our children together at the same time. And this is just a very small window into how father George taught his son Georgie and his son Jimmy how to think. And I remember George coming to me one day talking about his daughter, and he said, "You know, I never tell her she can't do something." And -- she's a fantastic young woman, but his parenting style was, "I always ask her, tell me why you're making that decision and explain it to me." But I'm sure he got that kind of style from his father. So not only was he respected here -- George respected here, but just as a parent, the amazing job he did and the legacy he left with his children is just something I wanted to recognize. Thank you.
