Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate. Today I'm standing here before you a proud JC alumnus, along with my friend, Senator McGuire; Rep. Connor, who is in the House; our former 2 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 13th Legislative Day 2/19/2019 colleague, AJ Wilhelmi. I'm joined today by the Principal of Joliet Catholic Academy, Jeff Budz; Coach Jaworski; and the Director of Admissions, Ryan Quigley, as well as the student captains of the State Champion football and dance teams. Joliet Catholic has a proud tradition of athletic championships and currently has more State championships than any other private school in Illinois with thirty-two titles. The Angels Dance Team took first in Class 1A IHSA competition. Usually competitors at the national level, this is only the ladies second year as members of the conference. In order to reach its victory, the JCA dancers had to rebound after two earlier performances, which they did, to not only win the State Title, but record the best score in Class 1A tournament history. The team is coached by Shelley Poropat. The Hilltoppers are coached by WJOL and Daily Southtown Coach of the Year Jake Jaworski. He -- they have earned their fourteenth State championship by capturing the IHSA Class 5A champion {sic}. The team has a -- had a grueling regular season, which included three conference opponents, and capped off their season with a six-game win streak, leading the team to the State Title and a 10- 4 overall finish. In addition to the State Title, the team members were individually honored with two IHSA 5A Academic All-Stars {sic}, two IHSFCA 5A All -- All-State, an ESCC Offensive Player of the Year, and nine ESCC All-Conference, as well as seven All-Area First Team. I am pleased to welcome the Principal of Joliet -- Principal/President of Joliet Catholic Academy, Jeff Budz. Thank you. I would -- I would like to have everybody's attention here, if I may. On Friday, February 15th, in my City of 6 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 13th Legislative Day 2/19/2019 Aurora, it became the site of a horrific mass shooting.
PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR LIGHTFORD) Shh! Excuse me, Senator. Thank you. Senator Holmes.
Thank you so much. In the middle of what should have been a regular work day at Henry Pratt Company, a gunman began shooting at workers in the plant and took the lives of five men. Thanks to the heroic actions of police officers running into the chaos within four minutes of the first call, only one other worker was injured. The gunman shot five officers, who, I'm relieved to say, are all recovering from their wounds. We owe our deepest gratitude and wishes for healing to those officers and the other first responders at the scene. The victims of the shooting were Trevor Wehner, twenty-one, of Sheridan, Illinois; Russell Beyer, forty-seven, of Yorkville; Vicente Juarez, fifty-four, of Oswego; Josh Pinkard, thirty-seven, of Oswego; and Clayton Parks, thirty-two, of Elgin. Just as every one of us does every day, these men were very simply doing their jobs. They were taken from their spouses, children and grandchildren, parents, siblings, friends, and coworkers. They were taken from their community. We'll never be able to mend the loss or undo the trauma to those who witnessed those events Friday afternoon at Henry Pratt and to those whose lives are forever changed because of this heartbreaking attack. I pledge to my neighbors in Aurora that I'll do everything I can to help our community recover – but more importantly, I'll do everything I can to pay tribute to the victims and ensure we hold their loved ones in our hearts. I ask you to join me now in a moment of silence for Trevor, Vicente, Clayton, Josh, and Russell. Thank you.
