Thank you, Mr. President. I would like to take this time and recognize an outstanding athlete, Olympian, former Saluki, and Speaker at my Student Advisory Council, Deanna Price. Deanna had a world record weekend this past weekend in Albuquerque at the US indoor track and field championships. She became the first woman to break 26 meters in the 20 lb. weight throw, setting a new world record. The throw was 17 centimeters further than she had previously -- her previous world best. Deanna, who attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, is a two-time Olympian, placing eighth in the hammer throw, both times at the Olympic Games, in Rio in 2016, and Tokyo, in 2020. Deanna has overcome several injuries in her career, which ultimately halted her Olympic run, previously. Last fall, Deanna was willing, and gave up her time from traveling and practices, to speak at my student advisory council in Carbondale. She was energetic, full of wit, and the students, that day, left with a better understanding of how hard work and determination can allow you to reach the goals in your life. This past weekend is a great example of what Deanna persevered, working through this latest injury to come out better than ever. And now a new world record holder. Congratulations on this wonderful achievement, Deanna, and go "Dogs". Thank you, Mr. President. This resolution recognizes February, as nationally recognized, as Career and Technical Education Month. We know that career and technical education is an essential strategy for Illinois and helped with economic recovery efforts amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that approximately 412,000 students are enrolled in CTE across the State of Illinois. And we recognize that these programs lead in providing instruction for careers in high wage, high skill, in-demand occupations in 18 STATE OF ILLINOIS 103rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 19th Legislative Day 2/23/2023 such fields like business, finance, health care, technology, manufacturing and education. And I want to acknowledge, as well, that CTE places equity at the forefront of decision making, instructional programing, and student support services. We know that all students benefit from equity centered teaching practices, career connected learning opportunities to develop and discover practical skills and strengths and career exploration with CTE. So today, so today we are going to mark February 23rd, 2023, as the 106th Anniversary of the signing of the Smith Hughes Vocational Education Act of 1917, which was the first major federal investment in CTE, and it laid the foundation for bipartisan, bicameral support for career and technical education that actually continues today with the strengthening of career and technical education services for this Act. So, I just want to also acknowledge that there are many wonderful CTE programs and facilities in the 49th District, from our high schools to our community colleges, to also an entity called Wilco, where there's lots of training for all sorts of CTE programs. Today is one of those bittersweet moments I'm -- I'm - thank you, Mr. President, today is one of those bittersweet moments where we say -- say bye to semi-bye to a Member of our Senate team, Zach Braun, who many of you know on the communications team has been with us for five years. Right? All right. Just checking. I got to check with them still. And it's -- it's bittersweet because he is such a person and such a colleague in this work that we would never want to see him go. At the same time, we know that, you know, he is destined to do other things and we want him to continue to grow. And so today, I just wanted to rise and recognize his public service to this Chamber, to our State, to my office. I think we can all we all talk about the hardest parts of our job. I think for me, what I recognize is the most important piece of what we do is translating what we do here in Springfield, in -- in our districts, and all of our communication staff. And Zach do that for us day in and day out. Sure. Piggybacking on what Ram said, I've had the pleasure of working with Zach for three years. He had an amazing ability that we all seek in our communications staff to learn my voice and be able to write in that, which made my life a lot easier. He also did what I thought was a phenomenal thing, he came up to the district to meet with Members, my constituents, to get to know the voice of the community, which has helped so much in what he's been doing for me. And perhaps most important, he willingly participated in our after-hours West Wing marathons in the district office. Thank you so much, Zach. I'll miss you.
