4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 103rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 71st Legislative Day 1/17/2024 Thank you, Madam President. Today I have the distinct honor of recognizing the members of the Taylorville High School FFA Chapter. We all know the importance of agricultural education in our State and the opportunities it can bring to participants later in life. These students have taken their studies and their work to the next level. The Taylorville Chapter won the National Chapter Award: National Premier Chapter, in the Strengthening Agriculture Division. This award was the result of the program identifying the need for adult role models and establishing a program called "My Mentor." Representing this amazing group at the Capitol today are Taylorville High School Principal, Matt Hutchinson. Excuse me, Matt Hutchison, Taylorville FFA Chapter Co-Presidents: Drew Mickey and Abby Norris, and members Tucker Winans, Steven Franklin, Audrey Curtin, Liam Steward, Jake Whetsell, Waylon Paulek, Chloe Grant, Abby Erlenbush, and Jay Bliler. In addition to their recognition as a Chapter, several members won national awards, as well. These include: Jay Bliler, a National Proficiency Award Winner in Agricultural Research, Drew Mickey and Jay Bliler, who finished 2nd in National FFA Agriscience Fair Animal Systems, Abby Norris and Abby Erlenbush, 4th in National FFA Agriscience Fair Social Systems. So, we have the group, they can't come on the Floor because of our -- the size of the group, but they are in the Flag of -- the Hall of -- the Hall of Flags, right now. Unfortunately, not able to be here were the FFA Advisor, Sue Schafer, Tanner Mickey, and Lizzie Schafer. Madam President, I would like to and Members in the Chamber, I would like to take a moment to honor one of our Senate staffers, who is going to be leaving us at the end of the month to further his career outside the General Assembly. I have, I'm joined on the Floor today with Jonathan Wygant. John came to us as an ILSIP intern in 2015 after serving nearly 11 years in the United States Navy. John has been an integral part of the Senate Republican organization, and we are grateful for his many years on our Senate Republican staff, where he has focused on a variety of subjects guiding us in the areas of gaming and transportation, as well as, Veteran's affairs. He's a proud husband and father and a very Active member of his local community. From the world's finest navy to the Illinois Senate. John is a true patriot and public servant who has dedicated his life and career to improving our State, our country, and our world. John, I want to thank you for your many years of public service, and I want to wish you and your family the best going forward as you further your career. Thank you very much. Madam President. Continuing with the theme of graduations, and commencements, we too have a member of our tremendous team who is leaving us, Alfred Joseph Burse. Affectionately known as AJ, on our side of the aisle and on -- on the other side of the aisle is going to go on and further his career. This is a bittersweet, bittersweet moment because we know our staffs, they -- they are the unsung, unsung heroes of this Chamber. They are the individuals who do not get the recognition that they deserve. They put in countless hours on behalf of the people of the State of Illinois. We are the ones who in front of the cameras, but they are the ones who make us look good. And AJ embodies all of those qualities, starting in local government, where he worked tirelessly after being a graduate of Millikin University. He then went to work in my -- in my district office, starting as an intern. He eventually rose to district office director, where he was… He took on the task of managing me, which nobody everybody knows it's not an easy task, but he took that step. He took on that task with a with a zeal and a fervor that he then continued when he came here and he came here to Springfield to serve in multiple capacities, serving on the Financial Institutions Committee, serving on Local Government Committee, but also doing the Appropriations, Associated Appropriations work for both. We are going to miss AJ tremendously.
