Thank -- Thank you very much, Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, I rise today to lift up March 2nd as Adwa (Victory) Day, which is a national holiday in Ethiopia celebrated by more than 130 million people in Ethiopia and throughout the Diaspora. The day commemorates the pivotal Battle of Adwa, where a militia of more than 100,000 men and women decisively fought off European colonialism, on March 2nd, 1896, in the mountain town of Adwa, Ethiopia. In Illinois, indeed in the 7th District, there is a sizable Ethiopian and Eritrean population. As the son of an Ethiopian refugee and as the first Ethiopian American to take the oath of office to serve in this esteemed Body, and as the proud grandson of the late Esnakatch Tessima and Gessesse Mengesha, I am proud to lift up our history and celebrate this achievement on behalf of the 7th District. Ethiopia holds the place as the only African nation to remain independent and sovereign, never colonized and officially recognized by global powers throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Emperor Menelik II and his shrewd wife Empress Taitu successfully united the ethnic provincial groups of Tigray, Gonder, which is where my grandfather is from Wello, Oromo Gojjam, and parts of modern-day Eritrea. Ethnic groups and provinces spread out more than 1000 miles across very high altitudes and rugged terrains, I would add, during a time of ethnic division. Menelik II and Taitu are powerful and ineradicable 4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 23rd Legislative Day 3/6/2025 symbols of freedom for Black and African peoples globally, and paragons of African resistance to colonialism. Menelik miraculously mobilized troops from all over Ethiopia, while his wife, Taitu, created the blueprint that led to the overwhelming defeat of the Kingdom of Italy which at the time was seeking to establish a colonial empire in East Africa. I especially want to lift up and commemorate the women involved as this battle would not have been won if women did not participate in helping to defend Ethiopia. Women contributed securing water and food, providing medical care to those injured, acting as prison guards, spies, and morale boosters and fighters as they walk with the armies up and down the mountainous terrains for over 600 miles to protect Ethiopia, as a family. They also provided intelligence. Men served in cavalries and infantries, armed with rifles, spears and swords. Adwa (Victory) Day is commemorated with songs like "Tikur Sew" by Teddy Afro and "Taitu" by Yegna featuring Aster Aweke, written to celebrate this great military victory. On behalf of the 7th District, and as a proud Habesha, I'm honored to share this proud heritage with you today and give flowers to the extended Ethiopian community throughout the 7th District and across Illinois. Mr. President, May the Battle of Adwa offer inspiration for ages, not just for those of African descent, but for all freedom loving people everywhere now and for generations to come. Thank you.

Civic education is vital to sustaining and strengthening constitutional democracy in the United States. No questions about it. And it is important now more than ever to endure the practice of democracy, and that it is taught and learned anew by each generation. That is why Senate Resolution 131 aims to declare the second week of March, from March 9th to the 17th, as Civic Learning Week in the State of Illinois. I am so happy to be carrying this resolution in partnership with the Illinois Civic Missions Coalition, which has led the charge in getting almost 100 high school -- high schools from across the State to stand committed to their student's civic development by supporting teachers, schools and districts that provide civic courses. Senate Resolution 149 declares March 12th, 2025, as "Jerry Butler Day" in Illinois, in recognition of his contributions to Chicago through his work as a Cook County Board Commissioner, as well as a lasting music icon. Raised in Chicago's South -- Northside, living in the Cabrini-Green public housing development. He studied, as a chef at Washburne Trade 14 STATE OF ILLINOIS 104th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 23rd Legislative Day 3/6/2025 School before he embarked into a journey of music. He achieved fame, as the famous -- on the famous recording artist and group called, the Impressions, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and he later toured as a solo artist. As a three-time Grammy Award nominee, some of his biggest musical hits were "Only the Strong Survive", "Your Precious Love", "Ain't Understanding Mellow", to name a few as well as some of the biggest artists today, are today sampling his great hits, like Missy Elliott and Snoop Dog. Through his fame, he chaired the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, which pushed for retirement and medical benefits for musicians who were in the industry. He later -- he later started a political career. He served for 32-years as a Cook County Commissioner, where he was a member of the Public Health Committee and later became Chair of that Committee, Health and Hospitals Committee. I don't know if many of you all know, but Jerry Butler passed away last week, and that's why we're honoring him today. So, we'd like to honor Jerry -- Butler, and we want to remember him with his great contributions to Illinois and his lasting goal of providing health care services to our communities as well as the music. RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 104TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that when the two Houses adjourned on Thursday, March 6th, 2025, the House of Representatives stands adjourned until Tuesday, March 11th, 2025, and when it adjourns on that day, it stands adjourned until Wednesday, March 12th, 2025.
