Today, I am honored to welcome to the Illinois Senate the students, alumni and staff of the University of Illinois at Chicago's Latin American Recruitment and Educational Service program, better known as LARES, as we celebrate its 50th Anniversary. For half a century, LARES opened the doors of higher education to Latino students across Illinois. What began in 1975 as a small effort to recruit and support a few hundred students has grown into a nationally recognized program serving more than 4,000 students each year, the largest Latino academic support unit in the State. LARES has not only helped students graduate, but empowered them to become leaders in our schools, our neighborhoods and across our nation. Through mentorship, advocacy, and cultural pride, LARES has changed the landscape of higher education in Illinois and continues to be a model for equity and success. To the staff, alumni and students here today, thank you for your dedication to advancing opportunity, representation and excellence. Your work reminds us that when our communities are given the tools to support -- and support to thrive, we all rise together. Congratulations on 50 years of transformative service, and here's to the next 50 years of empowering Latino students to dream bigger and lead bolding -- boldly.
