26 STATE 0F ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT ! 10th Legislative Day April ll, 1991 Thank you, Mr. Presidentz Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate. Today marked for Illinois the annual day of remembrance of the atrocities of the Holocaust. I want to thank President Rock, of course, for having been in attendance, along with those Members of the Senate who did not have conflicting committee schedules, and thank Governor Edgar for his participation and remarks at the event. I was privileged this year to have been the one to represent the General Assembly in making remarks to the people in attendance and in honor of the memorial of the commemoration. Let me just say that the purpose of this is something that Illinois has been a leader in, and that is that we will learn from the mistakes of the past. That we can, in fact, say, ''Never againz'' if We do teach, unto future generations, the horrors of the past. Coincidentally, fifty years ago this year, we commemorate what has been called ''tbe Days of Infamyef' the bombing of Pearl Harbor - the entry of the United States into World War II. That very same day in a little town in Poland was the beginning of the gassing of people merely because they were Jews. That Was the first day that they used the trucks to transport seven hundred Jews in a little town called Lod to see if a gas pipe - a rubber hose attached from the gas pipe into the back of the truck would end up in a short ride exterminating those people. That led to the Zyklon-B gas chambers and to what Hitler called the ''Final Solution.'' So fifty years ago we saw what happened when people did not know - did not remember - did not understand. And Illinois has taken the lead in teachinq the future generatlons, so that for all times in the future we can say, ''Never again.'' And I thank you, Mr. President, for the participation of the General Assembly in the procedures, and to -- to the people of Illinois for also participating. Thank you. PRESIDENT ROCK: Further business to come before the Senate?
