SENATOR GEO-KARIS: Mr. President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, Steve came into the Senate when did in 1978. We were elected and started serving in 1979. He loved the Senate and he loved the House. He loved this country. He worked very hard to do his best for his constituents. And he was the founder of the Greek Night, which I Was his co-chairman, but he he was the one who engineered it and did an excellent job at the -- which we enjoyed at the Mansion a number of times. For tbose of you who don't know it, Steve and his sister were left orphaned by the death of their parents many years ago. And his sister lives in Greece and is married to the Minister of the Maritime Commissiony Aristotle Pavlidis. And Steve enjoyed his little nieee. Steve's mother and father are buried in Chicago, but the sister has requested that his body be -- transferred over to Greece, so that she can have . . him close by. And the Wake is tonight. '1 believe it's Salerno 's-Galewood Funeral Home. And those of you whc wish to remember Steve kindly, make a donation to a charity of yaur choice, because Steve loved people and he loved being an American. And we will miss him. He was fifty-two years of age when he had a terrible heart attack in his business and died shortly thereafter on the believe it was the 5th. And we certainly kish his sister, Kathryn Pavlidls, a1l of our sympathy. And we shall miss you, Steve. You served us well. PRESIDENT ROCK: Further discussion? Senator Brookins. I can remember our first NFL conferences. where Steve Would point out the restaurants that we needed to go to to eat and have dinner, and where to go. He actually organized you. He'd call your room. He got you together. He arranged your transportation. He got you to the proper restaurant at the proper time. He loved people. It did noe make a difference to him who you were, what you were - he loved people. So I'd like to say on behalf of myself and my -- and my seatmate, Ethel, and other Members, that we will truly miss Steve Nash. PRESIDENT ROCK: Senator D 'Arco. SENATOR D 'ARCO: Thank you, Mr. President. Steve Nash Was a friend of mine. I knew him many years, both in the Legislature and outside the Legislature. He was one of the kindest and most gentle human beings I've even met. He always Was looking out for someone else's interest other than his own. He eared very deeply about people and he always had a kind word to say about someone. As ' Senator Brookins said, he was a great social organizer. We went Eo Greece with him, and he organized al1 the events - and SenaEor Carroll is smiling - and Senator Carroll Was with us and former Senator Daniel O 'Brien Was with us and other people, and Senator Geo-Karis, Senator Lechowicz, and he Was just a great organizer. He just wanted everybody to have fun, enjoy themselves. And he was a dedicated politician. He served the Democratic party well and his country well. And he cared about America and its people. It was a shocking day the other day when I heard about the untimely death of a colleague and a friend. I jusk couldn't believe when I received the phone call what really transpired. But thereds no question about -- that Steve enjoyed the relaeionship he established kith people from a11 walks of life. I had the opportunity of meeting Steve in college. We both attended Wriqht Junior Colleqe, and then I qraduated and went into anokher school, but we -- we maintained the relationship that we established at that school with the friends that we established during that period of timer and embellished upon it. I was happy to work on his behalf of winning an election for the Senate and the House. And there's no question about ity as far as the relationship he established in both Chambers -- was a good relationship. There's no question as far as he -- if he put his mind to establishing an event, it was a successful event. When he discussed having Greek Night here at the State Capitol with Symeon Frangos and others from the Greek Community in Chicago who had restaurants, they made sure that the typé of a -- of a festiviky that was held here in Springfleld in behalf of that evening was the epitome of any type of a social event that's been here then and since then. But 1 think the most important thing as far as -- that I remember from Steve Nash was his commitment to the NeW Horizon School for Mentally Retarded. This is a school that khis General Assembly helped about ten years ago When we provided some additional funds to that institution for the ability to have that school expand and take in a larqer caseload, and Steve was always very active with Gloria Majewski, myselfr and others in makinq sure that that school had the proper funding for the coming year. As Adeline pointed out, he was an orphan - and there were two of them, Kathy and Steve: and they were very, very close. What hasn 't been pointed out, though -- there's another Gentleman by the name of Jim Regas, who has always been close to the family . 9 STATE 0F ILLINOIS 87th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRTPT 63rd Legislative Day July 8, 1991 He îs taken care, and made sure that Steve and Kathy received the proper amount of money that they needed While they were growing up, as well as -- heîs going to be escorting the body to Greece this comin: Wednesday to make sure that his final resting place is something that his family is aware of# and Eathy is able to take care of, because she's now living permanently in Greece. There's no question that Steve Nash was a good Member of this General Assembly, and would hope that the Words that were said here today would be passed to Kathy and to Jim, so they realize the importance of the type of work that he did Was appreciated. And as well as, IIm sure that he's up there now twirling that big cigar of his saying, ''I appreciate being with all of you and have a good dayo'' And Mr. President, I would hope that -- 1111 noW move to -- immediate adoption of Senate Joint Resolution 82. And as a matter of respect, Would ask all the Membership to rise in aceeptance.
