Today We are indeed honored, because the first time before any Legislature in the United States, We indeed have one of our consulates, the Consulate of a Free Lithuania - a consulate which has been in existence in Chicago for many: many j years in exile, but now is indeed a consulate in and of itself - and rightfully so, as we have seen Lithuania emerge miraculously ' from under the Russian boot, has gone on to become a member of the United Nations, after many, many long years of trying to sustain I I the fight for freedom and democracy. Today I would like to present to you Vaclovas Kleiza, and his good wife, Asta. He was born in Lithuania, and received his BS from the University of Illinois in Urbana and his MSW from Loyola University in Chicago. So he has much in common with many of us here, and certainly has strong ties to the State of Illinois. He has been active in the Lithuanian-American community for many years, and was appointed Consul General of Lithuania on December 3rd, 1985. Considering the miracle of the Balkanse considering the miracle of Eastern Europe and democracy, which has indeed come to a11 of these nationsy and as they try and -- and follow and become a -- a member of the community of nations and -- and hold -- hold true to many of the tenants that *e indeed hold dear, please, if you willy welcome Consul General of Lithuania, Vaclovas Kleiza, and his good wife, Asta.

Before I step down , too, we do have another guest Who 's with us - though she does not Wish to speak to us because she's a little shy about her English - and khat is Anna Roschova from Czechoslovakia, where she is a judge, a lawyer and a legislator, which is an interesting combination # folks . Mr. President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, I had the pleasure of serving as Minority Spokesman on the Judiciary Committee, which Senator Lemke chaired. I had always found h1m to be a very bright - very bright - and articulate man. He had his own way of doing things, but 1111 tell you one thing we never had a cross word, and he was alway: very fair and very honest in legislation that -- that was proposed by my colleagues on this side. I think itdll be a great loss to those of us who knew him . I did go to his wake and I think it Was in Berwyn -- or rather, Western Springs, wasn't it? Brookfield - I'm sorry. But I can tell you this - that he was devoted to his children.
