It wasn't my privilege to serve in Europe, but after watehing all the TV today 2l5 cn VE Dayr I wondered -- and I thcught I'd saved a newspaper that 2l6 I had recelved while serving out in the Pacific, on May the 8th, 2l7 1945. I dug -- 1 brought it With me today. Very brief. But thls 2l8 is about al1 the news we ever got the Pacifie. Butr it's the German surrender and Truman's announcement and just a little bit 220 about what went on in -- in the surrender ceremonies. In 238 World War IIr my uncle served as a foot soldier with Patton in Prance and Germany. My father served in the Navyr recelving the 239 distinguished flying cross. My mother-in-law served in active 240 duty as a nurse ln the Navy. And my father-in-law served as an 242 active duty Navy man in World War IT. Just got back from the hospital being wounded when we -- We junped on Luzon Island. Brings back a 1ot of memories. know 258 we were looking forward then to getting help from Europe to get us 260 home, and then we went along. But the big -- big thing in World 26l War for me was when President Truman dropped the Atomic Bomb . 262 We -- we were already being briefed as where we were going to be 264 jumping on Japan, in October. So; you know, -- I thought at the 265 time Presldent Roosevelt died that probably I'd never get home, 266 but if it hadn't been for President Truman wouldn't have got 267 home, because would have been tough when we went tnto Japan. 268 But it is fifty years ago.
