It is the one that gave a tax exemption to lifts and other devices on vehicles used by parapleglcs. The -- when this Went to committee was there any talk at all about an amendment to this so that the -- the inaccurate pcrtions would be removed? - and I would specifically refer you to references to the Illinais-lndiana Regianal Airport Site Selecticn Report that are inaccurate. The -- the TAMS Abstract is What j that's referred to. Was there any talk about taking those whereases out of the resolution so that we could get to the heart of the matter, whlch is to ensure that Midway stays open? That is not accurate at all. The Illinois-lndiana Regional Airport Report - this TAMS Abstract that cited airspace and air traffic control difficulties was referrin: to a -- if there was a nega-airport built mcre than ten tlmes the size of the present I Gary Regional Airpart. The Gary Regional Airport can easlly 1 / handle two hundred thousand operaticns per year Without any I interferenee with Midway. On the other hand, if Peotone was to be I bulltr that would have tremendous interference with Midkay. In I I other words, if Peotone's built, Midway has to close down - 1 somethinq that you are opposed to. The rest of the -- of the I resolution that talks about *he importance of Midway, of course, 1 is somethinq that I agree with. I Was the Chairnan in the House i I of an Aeronauties Committee. We held hearings throughout the -- I the State. We held hearings in 3ensenville, J where we talked about the problems with O'Hare. And we held hearings over in the Midway area. The people over at MidWay are -- are well aware of the advantages of having an airport - a viable airport - to there community, because they have seen the bottom. They have seen what it's like when those airlines left and the devastation to the economy over tbere. And these folks also know that airports create jobs. And so they were never, ever Wildly upset about the airport operating and even expanding. They were certainly concerned about noise; they were concerned about the safety of airplanes; but they appreciated, more than anyone, the advantages af having the airport. So I would just have to point out that you have whereases which are lnaccurate and it's unfortunate that they're in there, but the overall intent, and that is to make sure that Midway stays open, is something that I certainly support. 1 PRESIDING OFPICER: (SENATOR GEO-KARIS) Further discussion? I. , first of all, Want to indicate full support for this resolution, but it Would have been totally unnecessary, had it nct been for the oxymoronic actlon of the City af Chicago . Now, hoW can you, in facty turn around and attack a third airport and then suggest that the second airpcrt's going to be gone. There cannot be a third airport if the second one 's sone. So within their criticism of thak third airport, there's an oxymoronfc line. But I got to tell you, I really resent politicizing the issue against the tbird airport by using Midway as hostage. Let me suggest to you that the Mayor d(d -- for those of you who haven't been around a long time, he did suggest a third airport. That third airport Was in Lake Calumet. And I got to tell you, if there Was any reason for Midway to be shut down, it would be if Lake Calumet Was built. Now, this study, review, application process has been going on for nine years, and if you will read the report, or if, more hopefully, the City of Chicago will read the report, it states in there that the third airport at the site that was selected represents no - no - threat to Midway. It's right in the report. And I got to tell you, I know that there are forces -- forces of evil at work against the third airport that will use everything. You knowr there's an old expression that says, ''You always hurt the one you love.''
