Thank you, Madam President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, if I could impose upon your time for a few moments. First, I want to acknowledge and thank the President of the Senate, Senator Philip, for delaying the convening of this Session till 12:30 in order for many of us to attend, at the Old State Capitol, the Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony that we have each year, and that's what I wanted to address for a moment at this time. We held what is called "Days of Remembrance Yom Hashoah" as a Holocaust commemoration at the Old State Capitol earlier this STATE OF ILLINOIS 91ST GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 31st Legislative Day April 20, 1999 morning, at 11 o'clock. Governor George Ryan delivered some very eloquent remarks. Senator Ira Silverstein also, on behalf of the Illinois General Assembly, presented some remarks. We all take special note of the Holocaust. Six million Jews perished in that atrocity. And it's because of the commitment that all of you have shared with those of us of Jewish faith that we bring back, year after year after year, the history of the Holocaust. And that's very important. Today, at the Old State Capitol, in the balcony, were several dozen young people from elementary schools, who were there to be given a taste of what took place in the 1930s and the early '40sr where millions of people - not only Jews, but millions of people - died because they were of the wrong color, of the wrong ethnic persuasion, of the wrong religion, whether they were gays, or blacks, or Jews, or you name it; by the mandate of Adolf Hitler, they were put to death. I want to read a few excerpts of a responsive prayer that was recited today, and I think it will much more eloquently deliver the message than I am able to do: We come here today to testify, to bear witness to one of the darkest chapters in humankind's history. Those whom we never knew depend on us to remember and to tell their story. We recall how the innocent and pure were murdered - man, woman and child - with poison gas and in fiery furnaces. We recall their pain; we don't want that past to be forgotten. Let us heed the warning of the Holocaust - that the impossible can become possible, if we do not act in time. Our world is not the same since Auschwitz; the values that we teach and live by must be weighed and pondered in the light of our experience of mankind's capacity for evil. Let us go forth from here with renewed determination to combat violence, racism and hatred, to shun apathy and indifference, to work actively to bring harmony and healing to the world. May our ceremony of remembrance bring us renewed courage and hope. We lost our best left fielder. Chuy's gone. And I know that a lot of you have talked to me about it, too, and are concerned. So we've got to practice tonight. Yeah, Lincoln Park, up by the -- by the fairgrounds. Now, John Cullerton is asking each of the Democrats, and I'm asking each of the Republicans, to help us contribute ten bucks to the cause. John, Assistant Coach, and ten dollars, and as you know, we're going to give that to a worthy charity here in Springfield sometime after the game. So, if you would, when John and I come around, why, we'd appreciate you remembering the fact that each year fifty-nine Senators help us make somebody's life a little better here in Springfield.
