Their grade school is here, and one of their instructors also happens to be the mayor of that community and a good longtime friend of the Republican Leader, Frank Watson. 19 STATE OF ILLINOIS 93rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 45th Legislative Day 5/14/2003 The Senate Executive Committee - the Senate Executive Committee - will meet at 2:15 this afternoon, as opposed to 1 o’clock.

Patrick Welch (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WELCH) Ladies and Gentlemen, as a point of information, all the committees will be pushed back, probably about an hour. We will make new announcements. They will still be held, but they’ll be moved back, as Senator Silverstein indicated his was moved back from 1 o’clock to 2:15. Senator Cullerton, I would like to invite you and your guest to come to the Podium.

John J. Cullerton (D)

Thank you, Mr. President. We have a announcement, a presentation. You may recall that we had recently a -- our annual softball game with the House and the Senate. It’s actually sponsored by the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association. They’ve done this for -- for years, and as long as I’ve been here, as long as we can remember, we’ve had this softball game, and during that game, we have raised money. It used to be we sold tickets to the game, and -- and as all of you Senators know, we were -- it’s evolved so that now we’ve collected money from each Senator, both -- both sides of the aisle. And we have chosen in the past, a local charity to present this money to, and we’ve done that again this year. And actually, what we’ve done is we’ve collected five hundred and ninety dollars, ten dollars from each Senator, and then Senator DeLeo, who, as you probably know, is one of the wealthier Senators here, decided he wanted to come up with an extra two hundred and ninety-five dollars, and then he kind of challenged me to do the same. So, although I’m not as wealthy, I came up with the two hundred and ninety-five dollars. So, we’ve matched it, so we’ve got five hundred and ninety times two, whatever that is. And -- so this bill be going to a local charity, Contact Ministries, and we have Barbara Turner, who’s here to accept it and tell us just a little bit about what her charity does. Barb, here’s the money, first. Let’s -- let’s give her a round of applause for the work she does.

MS. BARBARA TURNER

Patrick Welch (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WELCH) Senator Geo-Karis, what purpose do you rise?

Adeline Jay Geo-Karis (R)

Mr. President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, last night the Conference of Women Legislators put on…

Patrick Welch (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WELCH) Could we please have a little quiet for Senator Geo-Karis’ announcement?

Adeline Jay Geo-Karis (R)

The Conference of Women Legislators put on what was known as the “Capitol Capers”, relative to the “Changing of the Guard”. I want to tell you that I was very pleased to see over six hundred people attend this reception and skit. Skit was very well done. We had a couple of our stars from here, like David Syverson was one the fellows who stole part of the show; Rickey Hendon, of course, who can never be stopped; Carol Ronen, who sang lustily, just like I did; and Jacqui Collins, who sang very well, too, and participated in the skits; and a number of others that I’m probably forgetting to mention. But I want to tell you, it was done in very good taste, and I certainly commend Pat Lindner, who imitated our State Treasurer to a tee and, of course, Barbara Currie -- Flynn Currie, the Assistant Majority Leader of the House, who did herself to a tee. And it was a fun evening. It was well worth it. And the COWL - Conference of Women Legislators - are awarding ten twenty-five- hundred-dollar scholarships to worthy recipients and they’re also giving ten thousand dollars to a very good charitable cause. So, the money that you spent going to the affair was well worth it, and I want to congratulate the people who were sponsors. And I want to congratulate the whole crew that worked so hard on “Capitol Capers” in “Changing of the Guard”, and I might say there was more tending toward Democrat, even though the -- the -- the directors are Republican. But anyway, it was good. It was in good taste and well worth it. So, keep supporting the Conference of Women Legislators, and God bless ‘em all.

Patrick Welch (D)

PRESIDING OFFICER: (SENATOR WELCH) Thank you, Senator Geo-Karis. House Bills 1st Reading.
