And we have -- as you know, last week we were here for the Governor’s State of the State Address. We were running a little late ‘cause we said goodbye to Denny Jacobs. As some of you people that have been here for a while know the history of the Jacobs family, this will be a third generation member joining us. Ladies and Gentlemen, I’d like the General Assembly, the Senate, to welcome our newest Member, Michael Jacobs. Ladies and Gentlemen.

I’m learning as I’m going along. Thank you very much for your warm welcome. Before I begin today, I would like to ask for a moment of silence. A petite, twenty-three-year-old Rock Island girl, who was raised in Milan, gave her life over the weekend in Iraq. Sergeant Jessica Housby, who grew up in Milan, lost her life when an explosion rocked her vehicle as she was leading a convoy forward. I guess it proves in the end that freedom is not free - there’s a very high cost. And as all of us begin our work, I want to keep her -- her in mind today, and so if we could get just a quick moment of silence, I’d appreciate it. Thank you. Today I stand on the broad shoulders of my great uncle, Charles F. Carpentier, who was State Senator from this district and also Secretary of State. I stand on the shoulders of my grandfather, Oral “Jake” Jacobs, who served in the House, and of course, my loving and wonderful father, State Senator Denny Jacobs. Although I come to this Body with a rich tradition in public service, I’m going to roll up my sleeves and go to work. I want to thank Senate President Emil Jones for his loyalty and leadership; as well, Minority Leader Frank Watson for his dedication to his troops. Thank you, Madam President, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate. My pleasure to rise and welcome Senator Mike Jacobs to the Senate today. Our districts adjoin each other. We share several counties together. But I want to recognize Mike’s mother, Mary Ellen - Mary Ellen Jacobs, Denny’s wife. She’s hiding back in the corner there. Let’s give Mary Ellen a great round of applause. Not -- not only has Mary Ellen been a -- a loving and devoting wife to Denny for all these years, but she’s also raised a wonderful son in Mike. Known -- I’ve watched Mike grow up. We’ve known each other for many, many years. And I noticed in the Moline Dispatch -- in the Dispatch this weekend, when they were interviewing Mike about -- when they interviewed Mike about coming to Springfield, and Mike’s quote was -- and I don’t have it -- the exact words, but he said something to the effect that he wasn’t going to try to fill his grandfather’s shoes, who served as a Rep. for ten years; he wasn’t going to try and fill his dad’s shoes here in the Senate, who’s been here for eighteen years. Mike was going to lay down his own tracks with his own shoes. And, I know Mike and he will do that, and he’ll lay down his own course. He’ll be his own man here in Springfield.
