I would like to -- send a sincere thank you to those who attended the late Senator Margaret Smith’s visitation tribute and funeral this past weekend. A special thank you to President Jones and all current/former Members of both Chambers, President Phil Rock, Mayor Richard Daley, former U.S. Senator Carol Moseley Braun and all of the Chicago Aldermen, Congressmen, Treasurer {sic} Roland Burris and other elected officials of the State. She was truly a wonderful woman. She was a pioneer of faith- based politics before it was fashionable, consulting God in all matters. By the tone of the service, we know that Senator Smith represented the 3rd District -- with pride and dignity and she will be missed. Any memorials for Senator Smith can be sent to her church -- Bethsaida Baptist Church and I have the address if you need it and if you have any questions our Health and Human Services Committee staff person, Nia Hassan can assist you with that. Thank you all for giving Senator Smith a grand homecoming.

Madam President and Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, I served with Margaret Smith and Margaret Smith was probably one of the least offensive persons and one of the smartest women we ever had in this Senate. I can remember when she presented a 3 STATE OF ILLINOIS 94th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 46th Legislative Day 5/23/2005 resolution in honor of Harold Washington when he won over Jane Byrne and Margaret’s husband had been in the Senate before and then she took his place after he died. But she was a very bright, articulate person who had -- had her old little Cadillac and would ride back and forth and then later on when she became ill she survived her illness and I can tell you, she was probably one of the smartest women we ever had in the Senate and I lay tribute to her as being a nice person, very polite, very civic- minded and very civil person and I, certainly, wish her joy when she’s up there in Heaven with her family, meeting my family and they’re probably asking her, what am I doing and she’ll probably tell them, she’s doing all right, don’t worry about her. But that’s -- that was Margaret Smith. God rest her soul and God bless her and her family.

They won the Class AA High School Basketball Tournament. They set a record for the most wins. They’re in the balcony behind us, but I'd like to -- I'd like to read their names: We have the Manager, Jolene Wells; we have player, sophomore, Alex Starks, -- Biannca Ward; we have junior, Jacq Richmond, Jewel Sanders, Hanna Reising and we have Assistant Coaches Ralph Gallo, Todd Hursey and Tom McGhee.
