She recently won a bike for being the top cookie seller for her service unit. And I can already attest she is a natural relationship builder. She’s here with her mother, sitting right up behind the President’s desk, Mari Kaye Rath; her little sister, Katrina; her grandmother, Marcie Rath. And that is Lexi Rath. Also, Edward Shulka. He’s the tall, good-looking guy right here. He’s in eleventh grade. He’s homeschooled. He has worked on my campaign, as well as another Congressional campaign. Mr. President, I rise on a point of personal privilege.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, this is probably one of my favorite weeks of the legislative Session. Tomorrow is Evanston Day here at the State Capitol, but today is of even greater significance to me, because today I’ve been joined, in the gallery immediately behind me on the Democratic side, by some of the most courageous people who you would ever hope to meet. I’m joined by a group from the Children’s Oncology Services of Chicago. This week, we’re going to designate this week, as we do every year, as “Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Week” in Illinois. There is frightening data which points to the number of children who are increasingly diagnosed with all forms of invasive cancer. And yet, the five-year survival rates for all childhood cancers is increasing significantly. According to the National Cancer Institute, just over fifty-eight percent was the survival rate in 1975, and in 2003, the year for which we have the most recent data, just under eighty percent is the survival rate. Much of this is the 25 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 22nd Legislative Day 3/29/2011 direct result of the increased knowledge that we have in the medical field. But if there’s something that’s a constant, year in and year out, day in and day out, it’s the level of courage, perseverance and faith that each of these young people behind me, and their families, and the dedicated staff and volunteers who work with them, show, so that they can indeed teach all of us a lesson in leading our lives to the fullest. So if we could ask our guests in the gallery to please rise, directly behind me, with the Children’s Oncology Services, and let’s give them all a warm tribute for all they’ve shown for us. Thank you.
