Yes, thank you, Mr. President. It's our task to -- as a Body, to appoint the Secretary of the Senate. That's what this resolution is about. And in doing so, we are saying goodbye to our Secretary of the Senate, Jill Rock, who has been with the Senate when she joined the staff all the way back in 1988 - so she's been here before I was here. She's had a number of responsibilities over the year -- over the years and has built quite a résumé. She worked on the Senate staffing committees, like Insurance and Pensions and Licensed Activities. She worked as a Special Assistant to -- to the Minority Leader. She served as Deputy Chief of Staff; served as Director of Staff Operations; even served as Sergeant-at-Arms for a few months; and then, of course, became the Chief of Staff. And in March of 2009, we elected her as Secretary of the Senate. And she's served this Body very well, and the institutional knowledge has been a tremendous and valuable asset to the Senate. She recently got married and expressed her wishes to focus on her new family. So we're, as a Body, sad to see her go, but we're happy for her and wish her luck in her future endeavors. Mr. President, the vacancy that occurs, our rules call for the election of the Secretary of the Senate. So when Jill announced that she was leaving, we knew that this important position had to be filled, so I asked former Secretaries of the Senate and a former Member to serve as a committee to do a search. I think we had twenty-one, twenty-two folks that applied for this position. And as a result of that process, we found someone who we think would be able to oversee the Office of the Secretary of 7 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 76th Legislative Day 1/31/2012 the Senate ably and efficiently. Tim Anderson is a new appointment, but he's no stranger to this Body. I came here in 1991. He came here in 1992. Tim you know from his work over at the Commerce Commission, but those familiar with our caucus remember Tim for his outstanding work on staff. He also was a Senate staffer, staffing a number of the Senate standing committees, like Revenue and Executive Appointments; served as the Appropriations Director for the caucus; and was a special assistant in charge of our Rules Committee. So, Tim knows our institution, knows how it operates, and is aware of the challenges the State faces, and the Senate is very fortunate to have him. Tim, thank you very much for coming on board.

Thank you. Just this past Saturday, we laid to rest twenty-nine-year-old Marine Captain Nathan McHone. Captain McHone graduated from Crystal Lake South High School and was known as an accomplished athlete and a hard worker with a killer smile. Nathan enlisted in the Marines in 2005, earning the rank 11 STATE OF ILLINOIS 97th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 76th Legislative Day 1/31/2012 of first lieutenant in 2007 after serving two years at the Naval Aviation Command in Pensacola, Florida. In 2008 {sic} (2009), he was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 363, MAW, Hawaii, and was promoted to captain. He served as a pilot. You know, the ones we see on TV that scoop in and pickup the wounded under heavy fire. And those Marines that flew with Captain McHone shared time after time how they felt safe with Nathan in the captain's chair. In his more than six years in the military, Nathan was awarded two Air Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the NATO Medal. Nathan was serving his second deployment in Afghanistan with Operation Enduring Freedom when his helicopter crashed, killing him and six other Marines. May we please grant him, one of Illinois' fallen heroes, the honor and respect of a moment of silence for his service to country, and to freedom, for his bravery in the line of duty, and for his ultimate sacrifice?
