As you know, or maybe you don't know, March is Women's History Month. Since 1995, Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month". And in honor of 10 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 22nd Legislative Day 3/12/2013 Women's History Month, members of the Women's Legislative Network has joined us in the Senate gallery, to my left. And in a salute to the past, present and future women of the Illinois General Assembly, I would like to highlight some of the women firsts in the State of Illinois. In 1922, just two years after women were given the right to vote, Lottie Holman O'Neill was the first woman elected to the Illinois State Legislature. She continued to serve in the Illinois House and Senate for forty years. Earlean Collins was elected the first African-American woman to the Illinois Senate in 1977 and served until 1999. Adeline -- Adeline Geo-Karis was a trailblazer, and in 1985, she became the first woman to serve as Assistant Majority Leader in the Illinois Senate. In 2003, the first Hispanic woman, Senator Iris Martinez, was elected to the Illinois Senate. And in 2009, State Senator Christine Radogno became the State's first woman Caucus Leader, Minority Leader of the Illinois Senate. So I'd like to thank you and wish you to recognize and celebrate Women's History Month with me. Thank you.
