Yes, thank you, Mr. President, Members of the Senate. Last Valentine's Day, the Senate passed Senate Bill 10, the Marriage equality bill, but -- with thirty-four votes. Just moments ago, the House saw the wisdom of our ways and passed it with sixty-one votes. Although the Senate's already passed the bill -- exactly, I think that does deserve a round of applause, so thank you. Thank you, House. The Senate's already passed the Marriage equality bill, but we need to vote again to concur on the House bill {sic}, because two small changes were made in the House. First, the Human Rights Act exemption for private clubs, such as the Knight {sic} (Knights) of Columbus halls, was just reiterated and confirmed in the bill. Second, the effective date of the law was removed so that Senate Bill 10 could pass in the House with a simple majority rather than requiring, you know, three-fifths of the members to vote. Thus same-sex marriages will be recognized in Illinois beginning June 1st, 2014, the way the bill has been amended. My heartfelt thanks goes out to everybody - the many people here who knocked on doors, made phone calls, spoke to legislators, had very tough conversations with family and friends, donated time and money and never gave up on the slow-moving, but sometimes messy process towards culminating in today's vote and making sure we actually do 13 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 72nd Legislative Day 11/5/2013 achieve justice here. It can be a messy business, I know, this legislating. I look forward to celebrating when the bill is signed. Today, I think we have a chance to send a powerful message that we do not discriminate in Illinois; we treat no one as a second-class citizen. It's a victory for all of us and I urge an Aye vote.
