I would like to introduce to the Body that is here today a few of the -- the good men from the fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. It is the oldest African American fraternity here in these United States, founded December 4th, 1906. Their fraternity -- our fraternity, which I am a member, was founded on the principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Our aims to do in our fraternity is do manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind. It's -- it's a -- a strong service organization. Thank you. In the gallery today, behind me, from Southern Illinois, is a team. We talk about teams all the time coming up here, baseball teams, basketball teams and all that kind of stuff. This is a different kind of a team today. It's an archery team. This team got started in 2012. Since 2012, they've won five national championships in the State. So, starting with, in 2012, they won a women's bow hunting national; 2013, men's bow hunting national; 2013, mixed team hunting national; 2013, compound national, and the last one is a bow hunting individual. And these teams are not competing with just people here in southern Illinois; they're competing all over the United States. And some of the states they compete with is - mister, will you please stand up while I'm talking? - Some of the teams they -- states are Michigan, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Texas. Ladies and Gentlemen, I have a 8 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 121st Legislative Day 5/14/2014 very special guest here with me today, a gentleman that I think many of you will recognize his name, Kenny Wallace, a very famous NASCAR driver for - I don't know, Kenny, how many years? - twenty- five years, and he is originally from St. Louis, born and raised in St. Louis, but now lives in North Carolina. I asked him, why North Carolina? He said, "Well, if you want to be a country western singer, you go to Nashville. If you want to be a NASCAR driver, you go to North Carolina." And that's why he's in North Carolina. He has -- married for -- been married for thirty years, has three children. He has had nine hundred NASCAR starts, nine NASCAR nationwide wins, ten NASCAR nationwide poles. Somebody asked him earlier, "Well, what's the fastest you've ever driven?" He said, "I qualified one time at two hundred and one miles per hour." Just quite amazing. But Kenny is here today - and we also have some folks from the Corn Growers with us as well - but Kenny's here today also to visit with you folks, but to talk about E15. All of NASCAR burns E15 in their vehicles, and so it's a very high performance fuel and something that Kenny is very supportive. And I'd just like everybody, Madam President, to welcome Mr. Kenny Wallace here to the Illinois Senate.

Thank you very much, Madam President. The sorority has maintained at the forefront of positive change in American life, particularly relating to the African-American community, for one hundred and six years. Many women have been and currently are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, including the -- the late First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt; the late civil rights leaders, Coretta Scott King and Rosa Parks; actress Phylicia Rashad; poet Maya Angelou; writer Toni Morrison; singer Alicia Keys; attorney Star Jones; comedian Wanda -- Wanda Sykes; actress Jada Pickett- Smith {sic} (Pinkett-Smith); Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson; and Cook County Recorder of Deeds Karen Yarbrough. In addition, 18 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 121st Legislative Day 5/14/2014 many women of the General Assembly and legislative staff are members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, including myself, Senator Mattie Hunter; Senator Toi Hutchinson; Representative Monique Davis; our staff, India Hammons and Nia Odeoti-Hassan. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has a long history of leadership development, academic excellence, shared values, and contribution to the world community. And -- the 2010 to 2014 -- in conclusion, Madam -- Madam President, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, administration continues to fulfill the service imperative of the founders through the theme, "Global Leadership through Timeless Service". Its signature program, the Emerging Young Leaders, will impact twelve thousand girls in grades six to eight in developing leadership skills, civic engagement, academic preparation, and character development. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority has an -- has an annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Day in honor of this work here in Springfield, Illinois. And thank you very much for your indulgence.

Thank you very much, Madam President, Members of the Senate. 19 STATE OF ILLINOIS 98th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 121st Legislative Day 5/14/2014 Just a little earlier, I had the opportunity and honor of introducing this Body to some of the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Today recognizes and honors the 2014 Alpha Phi Alpha Day held here in the Illinois State Capitol and we designate the date of May 14th, 2014, as Alpha Phi Alpha Day in the State of Illinois. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity was incorporated and founded on December 4th, 1906, by seven college men, respectfully known as the "Seven Jewels", on the campus of Cornell University in Itasca {sic} (Ithaca), New York. Alpha Phi Alpha initially served as a study and support group for minority students who faced racial prejudice, both educationally and socially, at the University. The "Jewels" and their early leaders of fraternity succeeded in laying a firm foundation for Alpha Phi Alpha principles of scholarship, fellowship, good character, and the uplifting of humanity. Since its establishment, Alpha Phi Alpha has provided the voice and supplied its vision to the struggle of African- Americans, people of color, issues of civil rights, issues from around the world. We currently have over seven hundred colleges and alumni chapters here in the United States, District of Columbia, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Europe. Amongst many of our brothers that have come through the ranks are Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, W. E. B. Du Bois, John Hope Franklin, John H. Johnson, Adam Clayton Powell, Andrew Young, Cornel West. We are very lucky and honored to have working with us here in the General Assembly Representatives Al Riley, Arthur Turner, Jr., Emanuel "Chris" Welch, and, of course, our Vice President of the Midwest Region, Representative Elgie R. Sims.
