On Veterans' Day, I was in Champaign and had an opportunity to go to a wonderful service that the Champaign Rotary puts on for veterans and I met the two folks to my right and my left. Thank you, Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is -- it is my great honor today to introduce two World War II veterans to the Illinois State Senate. On my left is Charles Francis "Chick" Bruns. He was born in Villa Grove, in my district, and now resides in Senator Bennett's district. In World War II, he was part of 5 STATE OF ILLINOIS 99th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 131st Legislative Day 11/29/2016 the 3rd Division, 10th Combat Engineer Battalion. He was in five invasions: North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, and Southern France. He witnessed the construction of the bridge at Point Calavá, Sicily, known as the "Bridge in the Sky". He watched General Patton beat Field Marshal Montgomery to Messina, Sicily. He was there for the liberation of Rome, the crossing of the Siegfried Line, the destruction of the swastika atop the Nuremberg Stadium, the liberation of Dachau, and also bombing of -- of one of Hitler's homes. He came home as a Technical Sergeant. His life story can be viewed at 70yearsago.com that was put on line by one of his sons. And I'd be remiss if I didn't recognize his sons, John and Chuck Bruns, who were good enough to accompany him here today. To my right is a wonderful lady who I got to know at the same event, Jill Knappenberger. And Jill was born in Evanston. Is that you, Terry? Who's Evanston? No. Somebody. Whoever it is. Yeah. She graduated from McLean Community High School in Senator Barickman's district, ended up down our way. She was a member, early on, as a young lady of the First Aid for the Red Cross, the Civil Air Patrol, the YMCA swimming team in Decatur, the Artist's League, but then volunteered for overseas duty at the American Red Cross. She went in to serve our country as a Clubmobile operator in the European Theatre of Operations. She was at the Battle of the Bulge. She was in the Battle of the Bulge. She took fire in the Battle of the Bulge. And, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm sad to say, she lost her twin brother Jack in the Battle of the Bulge. This dear lady, Jill, has come home, thankfully, to us. And has been -- there's whole list of wonderful accomplishments here. I want to also tell you, there have been a couple neat things that have happened so far today. I want to 6 STATE OF ILLINOIS 99th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 131st Legislative Day 11/29/2016 thank Representative Linda Chapa LaVia, who has, of course, served our nation. She caught us outside and said hello. Senator Muñoz was going to bring a couple American pins over to them. We appreciate that. We've had so many wonderful people saying hello. And I've been remiss - Dick Lockhart, our longtime friend, a -- a lobbyist around the Capitol, Dick was also in the Battle of the Bulge, and so we had a chance earlier today to get them reacquainted. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, we are here today and privileged and honored to serve today because of these folks, so let's give them a big round of applause.

Thank you, Mr. President. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Senate, today I have with me a couple special guests, my district LA Jacob Seukunian. He's been my LA since I came to the Senate and he does a fantastic job. He was recently -- well, actually, recently yesterday, there was a great article, if you want to Google it on QCOnline, about the job he does in my office from a constituent that was -- was so happy with the result that he got through our 7 STATE OF ILLINOIS 99th GENERAL ASSEMBLY REGULAR SESSION SENATE TRANSCRIPT 131st Legislative Day 11/29/2016 office that he decided to write an article -- a letter to the editor of the paper. I also have with -- with me, Rachel. I'm not even going to try to pronounce her last name because I will screw it up for sure. Rachel's been interning with us. She's a student at Augustana and she's majoring in sociology. And we are so happy to have her on our team and also happy to have her here today. So if we could have a warm Senate welcome for -- for these folks.

I have a secretary back in my office that's been with me from day one and she's here today. And there's no way that I could survive or have been a Senator or a State Rep without her. She was my right hand. She was the -- it's just unbelievable what she done with me, with the people in the district. Her name is Christy Gribble. She's here next to me. And I just wish everybody would give her a great big hand. So she's been great for me.
