"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. We have to talk about these events more often than we used to. In Pittsburgh, a few weeks ago, we had another mass shooting in this country. Me, being of Jewish descent, my family would go to Synagogue on a regular basis. That would be a place that we would find to be a safe haven where we could pray, reflect, and all the above, and that's becoming less and less of an option for us. So, we put this Resolution forward today to honor the memory of those that perished in the… in the shooting. I want to read a small part of a prayer. It's called the Mourner's Kaddish that we would say at the times when people pass. So, I'm going to read it to you in Hebrew first and then I'll do the part in English. The part in Hebrew is (recites Mourner's Kaddish in Hebrew). And that says, May you establish peace in heavens, give peace to all of us, and to the earth. And let us all say Amen. At the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, 11 of our Jewish brothers and sisters were killed simply because they were Jews. It is devastating, heart wrenching, and shocking. While the Jewish community has long known its fair share of hate through history, this atrocity serves as a reminder that anti-Semitism is not a problem of the past. Anti-Semitism is thriving, growing, all over the United States and the world. This vicious incident is part of a larger trend in Illinois and across the country. In 2017, the Anti-Defamation League tracked a 57 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents, the second highest number of incidents ever recorded. In the Midwest region, including Chicago, 103 percent increase in incidents was noted. Four point two million Anti-Semitic tweets posted from three million unique handles. Violence against Jews does not occur in a vacuum. It is made possible by the slow and insidious normalization of anti-Semitism. What we have learned time and time again, is that hateful words lead to hateful action. We cannot let this normalization take root and we cannot stand quietly when these hateful words are spread. As every person here understands, hate crimes are meant to target not just victims, but entire communities. In this incident, the shooter's goal was to terrorize American Jews and anyone who believes in a just, inclusive society. This was his intent, but we will not let him succeed. With all of us standing together, as we are today and across the country, he will fail and he will fail miserably.
