While Lagos State as of Assembly came to life in 1979 and I'm sure you understand the gap in between. The system of government in Nigeria has been designed to follow the pattern that America has adopted, which is the Federal System of Government. We are the center and we are the components unit, which Lagos State happens to be one of the units of the Federal Government. By brief introduction, Lagos was a former capitol of Nigeria, till the capitol was moved to Abuja, an action that has not change the significant position of Lagos. Lagos, a state of aquatic splendor, with a population of over 20 million people, which is projected to be growing every minute with influx of people from all around the world. It has 40 members with a member representing each constituency. Lagos Parliament came into existence in 1979 without a physical infrastructure of its own. Our struggle to weather the storm since then, to become a force to reckon with among Parliaments in the world in spite of the repeated military interregnum up till 1999 when Nigeria returned to democratic dispensation. Our Parliament has made great laws that have a positive impact and effective effect on the life of our people and State. We have made law on child rights to encourage education for all children with strong punishment against parents and guardians who infringe on such right. Law against domestic violence is also of a great achievement of our Parliament to protect the rights of women in the state. Health insurance scheme to create medical protection for less privileged. Lagos State Financial Management Law to ensure economic growth. Speaking Yoruba as a language in our public schools to ensure protection of our mother tongue, culture, and tradition. Lagos like other advance component unit of a sovereign State has created a source of revenue of its own away from dependence on natural resource to internally generate a revenue of billions of dollars… billions of naira excuse me [inaudible]. Distinguished colleagues, Lagos Parliament derives its power from the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended it is saddled with Legislative powers, ours is unicameral at the state level. Mr. Speaker, Sir, it is a common knowledge that your Parliament is older than ours, having been established in 1818. Yours is bicameral Legislature with purposeful and independent legislation as achievements. In recognition of all this, I strongly believe we have a lot in common. We make laws for the benefit of people, with the collection and concentration of people of different race and colors as our constituents, also an independent Parliament from the center under Federal system. It is a view of all these that we are here to under study your old and experienced Parliaments, to encourage exchange program between both Parliaments. To also solicit for support in form of Parliaments materials in literature and urge all distinguished colleagues in the house to encourage their constituents to invest in Lagos economy which is safer and supportive for returns of such investment and also to visit Lagos for better understanding of what Africa is all about. Ashley was assigned to the 708th Medical Company, the 108th Medical Battalion, 108th Sustainment Brigade in the Guard that was activated. And she passed away at the age of 20 while serving our country in Kuwait City, Kuwait, November 12, 2007. And you have our utmost respect and thanks for your daughter's ultimate sacrifice. Thank you for coming today. Also in the gallery are several women veterans that I would like to quickly introduce to you. We have Dana Brady, who came from Chatham. She was an Army E4 Specialist, served from 1990-1994. Shelby Hinkelmann came all the way from Rockford, served the Air Force from 1974-1975 as an airman. Rosemary Connolly, she's another U.S. Airforce Veteran, she served from 1972-1995 and she retired as a Master Sergeant. Nancy Clark, served in the U.S. Army, came from Rockford, she served 1970-1990 and retired as a Master Sergeant. And she was also the first female field recruiter in Chicago. Jean Henning was in the U.S. Army from 1984-1985. She traveled from Roselle, Illinois, she served as an E3. Laverne Moss was unable to attend today, but she served in the United States Navy from 1988-2008, retired. Laura Doss is attending today, she served in the United States Army. She was a cargo specialist, sheet metal worker, and MP from 1989-2003 as a Sergeant, she traveled from Jacksonville. Candy Jackson Gann she came here from Havana, Illinois, the U.S. Army 1977-1997. She served in the United States Army 1976-1979 and she was one of the individuals that we like the most in the military, a food service specialist. We also have Ashti Dawson, she was activated in the Army National Guard for ten years and five years reservist from 1994-2014. And she came from Sherman, Illinois. Kimberly Banister attended she's in the United States Navy 2002-2006. She was an E4, she came from Pawnee, and she directed aircraft. Joan Garvert, she's attending. She was an Army Nurse Corps 1969-1971. She's here in Springfield and she was also one of our Bicentennial 200 Veterans. There's a few individuals that could not come to Springfield today, and I'd like to recognize them as well. Deanna Irene Jimenez, she served in the 108th MMB of the Illinois National Guard. She was a chemical biological radiological nuclear specialist. Amy Holland, she served in the Army post 9/11 as a combat veteran with Illinois Joining Forces. Marie Marcotte-Doty, she was actually nominated by her husband, she served in the Army from 1990-1993, a Hawk Missile crew member. Kathleen Greene, she was in the Marines. She served from 1944- 1946 at MCRD Chicago, Illinois. Linda Greene was in the Navy 2009-2015 on the USS Bunker Hill. Tricia Voirin deployed with the 1244 transportation company from 2003-2004 and she's currently retired. We have some WWII veterans that were nominated by the Blanche Osbourne Chapter of the Women Marine Association. That would be my nominee, Helen G. Ehlers, she served from 1944-1946. Muriel Underwood is a WWII veteran as well. Gwen DePinto, and Veronica Potter. We have two sisters who are no longer with us, that were asked to be recognized as well, Mary Elizabeth Josephine Schulte Muth, she was a United States Navy Wave from '43-'45 and Madeline Cecelia Schulte, she was a Navy Wave from '43-'46. Members of the General Assembly, may we always hold our women veterans in high regard and may we welcome our visitors, and always remember that those that have served, served with pride, dignity, and the love of our country. So I'd also like to introduce his team. We've got Coach Moses, if you can give the crowd a little wave. We've got Mitchell Tapscott, who's in seventh grade, and he's the State Champion. "Thank you. As part of Women's History Month, I rise to commemorate the contributions of Ellen Hardin Walworth. Author, lawyer, and activist, born in 1832 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Morgan County native, Ellen Hardin Walworth, was one of the founders of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was the organization's first secretary general. She was one of four women who established the DAR in 1890. In 1893, she was one of the first to propose the establishment of the national archives and a speech at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. During the Spanish- American War, Walworth and other women established the Women's National War Relief Association to offer aid to the war effort. In her personal life, Walworth was tragically a victim of domestic violence. Her son, Frank, killed his father after years of intervening to protect his mother from his father's abuse. Walworth studied law to gain the knowledge to overturn the life sentence conviction of her son for killing her abusive former husband. They will have a key note speaker that will be diving into the teacher shortage and discussing some comprehensive ways Illinois can get an effective teacher in every classroom.
