Lieutenant Colonel Stein was commissioned into the U.S. Army and transferred to the U.S. Airforce. During his military career, he flew over 3900 missions, and he volunteered for a rescue mission on March 23, of 2003. During that mission over Afghanistan, he was killed in service to his country.
