"Thank you. To the Body. Coming off of National Police Week, I would ask that today we take a moment to honor the life and the service of my community's Police Chief, Valerie Sheldon. Our Police Chief passed away last Thursday tragically in an off-duty car accident. And for anyone who's lived in a town of under a thousand people, you know how big a part of the community your police chief really is. She was always willing to help out. I got to know her best because she started our neighborhood watch program, which really knit the community together in ways that hadn’t happened before. Our mayor put it perfectly when he called her the perfect small town officer. Throughout her career, Chief Sheldon served many of our small communities in Montgomery County including Coffeen, Nokomis, and Witt. She was a volunteer on the Montgomery County EMA and a member of the Montgomery County Search and Rescue Team. She will be greatly missed in our county. I ask you all to please pray for her law enforcement family and her first responder family in Montgomery County who are feeling this so hard, but also for her family and her two sons Jake and Isaac. "To the Body. This past weekend, May 18, 2019 marks the 10th anniversary of the end of the decades-long Sri Lankan Civil War. Among over the 100 thousand people killed, were an overabundance of civilians who we have evidence were targeted as acts of war. These mass civilian casualties have resulted in families heartbreakingly torn apart and 20 thousand families are still without answers on what became of their loved ones. Many are missing and presumed dead, many are still in jails without any trial and the Tamil people are met with cold silence instead of answers from their government. A decade has passed without justice being served. The Tamil people deserve and independent international investigation into these apparent war crimes and to be restored their lands which were stolen from them. They deserve to live in true peace, and not a peace that's one without justice. I had the honor of celebrating the Tamil New Year this year with many Tamil people of Illinois who were incredibly welcoming and generous. They shared their delicious food, traditions, community, and history. It is my honor to count them now among my friends and sound a call for justice on their behalf.
