"Thank you. Today I have honor of sharing a women… for Women's History Month. And if you recall, last year shared the story of Ellen Martin… last year I shared the story of Ellen Martin, a woman who lived in my district from Lombard. And if you recall, Ellen Martin was the woman that who was the woman to ever vote in an Illinois election. However, on April 6, 1981 (sic-1891) when she cast her ballot she was not alone, 14 other female Lombardians marched with her to the polls and demanded that they be allowed to exercise their right to vote. Now one of the women who was with Ms. Martin that day was a women by the name of Ada Sweet, and Ada was 10100090.docx 4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 101st GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 90th Legislative Day 3/5/2020 another first woman of that era. Ada Sweet was the oldest of 4 sisters, 1 of 4 children also to be born to Colonel Benjamin Sweet. Her father lost the use of his right arm during a battle. And when he was assigned to command Camp Douglas in Chicago, Ada lived there with him and literally became his right hand, assisting him in all areas of his work. Now the family later moved to Babcock Grove, which is now Lombard, Illinois. And when General Sweet became the U.S. agent in Chicago in charge of pensions for veterans, again Ada became his right hand and learned the system and the business of the pension system for our veterans. General Sweet was also the individual who helped write that now famous town charter for Lombard that read, 'All citizens above the age of 21 years shall be entitled to vote.' And he wrote that with his daughters and many others in mind, so that they would able to exercise that right to vote. So, I'm sure you're asking, so how is Ada another first? Well, when her father passed away President Ulysas S. Grant… excuse me… Ulysses S. Grant appointed Ada Sweet as the pension agent in Chicago. Again, this was the first time a woman was… had been appointed as a pension agent who was continuously responsible for our veterans. And when she was reappointed to that position by 2 more Presidents, she served in that role until 1885 when she was asked to stepdown for political reasons. Truth is the commander didn't like Ada's position on government corruption, which was to clean it up. And when she resigned she said, 'Since the time I was requested to resign last April by Commissioner Black, I have desired to become independent of the whims of political schemers. So, as the grandson of an immigrant from Ireland whose last name is Butler, I feel I have full… I don't know, I'm in the Sullivan Caucus just by being Irish, I guess. So since we have no Sullivans, Sullivan Caucus is always a great event annually here in Springfield. I would encourage everyone, it's the day after St. Patrick's Day, Wednesday, the 18th of March at the Gin Mill at 5th and Monroe. It starts at 5 p.m. and goes until probably the 19th of March would be my guess. We would encourage everybody to show up for the Sullivan Caucus. It's always a great time."
