"I'd like to take a moment to honor and celebrate the life of one of my constituents, community leader Bernarda 'Bernie' Wong, who passed away in her sleep early this morning after a long bout with cancer. She was an amazing leader, trailblazer, and visionary. Co-founder and president of the Chinese American Service League for three decades, she helped many. She helped make Chicago's Chinatown community what it is today, helping so many people over the years and building up the community's infrastructure to welcome new immigrants and serve its people. I am forever grateful to her for her steadfast support and her belief in me as I ran for office and aimed to follow in her footsteps in serving the community. She has been a dear friend and a mentor to me and many others in the community. She was a spiritual mother in many ways. In other words, just to simply allow, for anyone who wishes, the ability to create restrooms that can be accessed by anyone. A colleague on the other side of the aisle took this as an opportunity to spew dangerous, hateful, and transphobic rhetoric. It was very late. We'd been hearing Bills here on the floor and in committees for about 12 hours, at least. We were also scheduled to come back very early the next morning. Out of respect for everyone involved in the work that we do here, my colleagues, our staffers, clerks, doorman, security, everyone who makes this chamber operate for us, I chose not to respond in that moment. The community, like some individuals who actually work here in this Capitol Complex alongside of us every day that we're here, like children of some of our colleagues in this chamber and the chamber across the rotunda, like loved ones and family members of the people across Illinois… and that’s all of Illinois… who expect us to stand up for them when we're here. This colleague chose to equate them with pedophiles, predators, and criminals. He chose to dehumanize, devalue, and debase all of these people who are no less human and deserving of respect than he himself. It's bad enough to have disrespected an entire community of people, but the context of his comments is also very important to understand. The claim that accusing transgendered individuals of being dangerous predators, under the guise of protecting women, is laughable. And to trot out stories of events that didn't happen in gender-neutral bathrooms, and weren't committed by members of the transgender community, served him no purpose. And this does not protect women. If you want to protect women, start by asking yourself the following. Have you supported the Equal Rights Amendment, without which women are still not represented in our U.S. Constitution? Have you supported policies that ensure women are paid equally for equal work? The protection that becomes from being equal under the law. The protection of being able to report those who actually commit gender-based assault and harassment. The protection of being valued for the contributions we make to our communities and workplaces. Those are your opportunities to support and protect women. I've asked multiple times in hearings about data being used, and what the process is, and so on. We've had 27 hearings. I've been at almost every one of them. And I see today that the Governor… that Governor Pritzker is once again going back on his word to veto a partisanly drawn map. Let us remind the Governor that he said, previously, short of a Constitutional Amendment, he would urge Democrats and Republicans to agree to an independent commission that would handle the maps. Today… today he said that, in order for us to have an independent commission, we need to have a Constitutional Amendment. That is directly in conflict with what he has previously said. But beyond that, the Governor said, 'I hope that Republicans will choose to work with Democrats on the map. Right now, it looks like they're just saying 'no'. They're not really engaging.' Well, let me tell you Governor, I'm engaged. I've attended almost all these hearings. I've asked questions at practically every hearing. And we get no answers from our side… from the other side. And we actually have the legislation to create an independent commission statutorily. I have introduced that legislation. Representative Spain has introduced that legislation.
