We educated generations of teachers that have gone out and taught generations of Illinoisans ever since we were founded in 1895. We have an excellent journalism school that has produced award-winning journalism… journalists around the world. We have a leader in quarterbacks and coaches in the NFL, as you may know. And I'm going to quickly talk about my objection to a proposed Bill that may be presented to this Body for vote. This House Bill 1797 will not require a parent to give their consent to a girl seeking an abortion, but it will repeal notifying a parent of her intent. Under current law, it is illegal for minors to use a tanning bed, get a tattoo or body piercing. Minors cannot vote, buy cigarettes, serve in the military, or purchase lottery tickets, but they will be able to get an abortion at any time, for any reason, without their parents' knowledge. We all are aware on how medical study after medical study have shown brain development in minors is not complete. This is why so many of our laws require parental involvement. There should not be an exception with House Bill 1797 repealing parental notification. I'm saddened to hear about the shooting that took place at Town Center Apartments in Champaign. Gun violence has plagued our community for far too long. And this morning, we are standing in recognition of the loss of life of Officer Chris Oberheim. But we also have to call to the family who also lost a young man in this incident, Darion Lafayette. I don't know what happened or what led to this incident, but I know that gun violence is plaguing our communities across the state. And we have to do more to address the over-proliferation of guns in our communities, as well as to build better relationships between the police and the community. So, today all of our families grieve. Champaign grieves. The State of Illinois grieves. This nation is actually grieving. Frederick Jr. Memorial Highway'. Chief Warrant Officer 4 Mr. John Frederick enlisted in 1942 in the Marine Corp. During 40 combat missions in World War II, he served as a tail gunner and radar operator in… during the Korean War, he flew 90 combat missions as an airborne intercept operator. He also served in the Vietnam War. In 1965, on the night of December 7, he was shot down over North Vietnam. He was held prisoner for over 2400 days and died in captivity. Mr. Frederick's remains were returned to the United States on March 13, 1974, and he's buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery in Tremont.
