"Thank you, Mr. Speaker. If I could have the Body's attention for just a few minutes. Thank you, Ladies and Gentlemen. I appreciate everyone's attention and apologize for taking sometime today, but I wanted to speak to some incidents that have been happening that impact my community and those throughout the United States that identify as Jews, people who identify as being Jewish. We've spoken on this House floor in the past about the rise in anti-Semitism in general. And, unfortunately, it's reached a fever pitch. As I drove down to Springfield just about an hour ago, I spoke to a pretty brave young man who just graduated from the 10200040.docx 4 STATE OF ILLINOIS 102nd GENERAL ASSEMBLY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TRANSCRIPTION DEBATE 40th Legislative Day 5/24/2021 University of Illinois. And in support… as an ability and an interest in supporting the State of Israel, he set up a rally with his siblings and his sisters in downtown Naperville. Thought it'd be a free expression of ideas, knowing that some people might disagree on the Israel-Palestinian issue and Middle East issues generally. But he thought he was safe. He grew up and raised in Naperville, was from the community, his family's in the community. He knew the people that he lived with, and he knew the people that surrounded him, and he knew the people, even those that would disagree with him, that it was a safe way to do and safe expression. Unfortunately, that's not what happened. So, yesterday, as this young man, 22 year old and his family, went to downtown Naperville to express their support for the State of Israel, they were yelled at. They were threatened. His younger sisters received death threats and rape threats on social media. This young man's car was surrounded by those that opposed his views, shaken, they tried to break the windows, started yelling, 'Kill the Jews.' Kill the Jews. Naperville. Just yesterday. We disagree on a lot of issues here on the House Floor and in our democracy, and that's okay. But it's really important that we are allowed a safe space to have that freedom of expression in the United States of America. And yesterday that was denied in Naperville, and it's been denied in New York. It was denied when a synagogue was attacked in Skokie a few days ago. It was denied in California. It's continually, increasingly denied with violent acts.
